Szonów/Schönau was, for many prisoners of war, a stopping place on 'The Long March' during the final months of the Second World War in Europe. About 30,000 Allied PoWs were force-marched westward by the Germans in appalling winter conditions, lasting about four months from January to April 1945.{{Cite web|url=https://www.livewallpapers.com/people-wallpapers/army-wallpapers|title=Military, Army Phone Wallpapers for iPhone & Android|website=www.livewallpapers.com}} Three Polish citizens were murdered by Nazi Germany in the village during the war.{{cite book|author= |title=Zestawienie Miejsc Zbrodni Popełnionych na Ludności Cywilnej przez Okupanta Hitlerowskiego na Ziemiach Polskich w latach 1939–1945|year=2022|language=pl|location=Warszawa|page=192|isbn=978-83-954388-3-7}}
