TAS2R31

{{Short description|Protein-coding gene in the species Homo sapiens}}

{{Infobox_gene}}

Taste receptor, type 2, member 31, also known as TAS2R31, is a protein which in humans is encoded by the TAS2R31 gene.{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: TAS2R31 taste receptor, type 2, member 31| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=259290}} This bitter taste receptor has been shown to respond to saccharin in vitro.{{cite journal | vauthors = Kuhn C, Bufe B, Winnig M, Hofmann T, Frank O, Behrens M, Lewtschenko T, Slack JP, Ward CD, Meyerhof W | title = Bitter taste receptors for saccharin and acesulfame K | journal = J. Neurosci. | volume = 24 | issue = 45 | pages = 10260–5 | date = November 2004 | pmid = 15537898 | doi = 10.1523/JNEUROSCI.1225-04.2004 | pmc = 6730199 }}

TAS2R31 is also expressed in the smooth muscle of human airways, along with several other bitter taste receptors. Their activation in these cells causes an increase in intracellular calcium ion, which in turn triggers the opening of potassium channels which hyperpolarize the membrane and cause the smooth muscle to relax. Hence, activation of these receptors leads to bronchodilation.{{cite journal | vauthors = Deshpande DA, Wang WC, McIlmoyle EL, Robinett KS, Schillinger RM, An SS, Sham JS, Liggett SB | title = Bitter taste receptors on airway smooth muscle bronchodilate by localized calcium signaling and reverse obstruction | journal = Nat. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with the perceived bitterness of sweetener acesulfame potassium.{{cite journal | vauthors = Allen AL, McGeary JE, Knopik VS, Hayes JE | title = Bitterness of the non-nutritive sweetener acesulfame potassium varies with polymorphisms in TAS2R9 and TAS2R31 | journal = Chem.
