Transcription elongation factor A protein 1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TCEA1 gene.{{cite journal | vauthors = DiMarco SP, Glover TW, Miller DE, Reines D, Warren ST | title = Transcription elongation factor SII (TCEA) maps to human chromosome 3p22 --> p21.3 | journal = Genomics | volume = 36 | issue = 1 | pages = 185–8 | date = August 1996 | pmid = 8812434 | doi = 10.1006/geno.1996.0443 }}{{cite journal | vauthors = Park H, Baek K, Jeon C, Agarwal K, Yoo O | title = Characterization of the gene encoding the human transcriptional elongation factor TFIIS | journal = Gene | volume = 139 | issue = 2 | pages = 263–7 | date = February 1994 | pmid = 8112616 | doi = 10.1016/0378-1119(94)90767-6 }}{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: TCEA1 transcription elongation factor A (SII), 1| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=6917}}

In other organisms, this gene is better known as transcription elongation factor II S (TFIIS). It mainly helps to resolve backtracked elongation complexes by inducing a cut in the RNAP active site, so reaction becomes possible again. It is also found in the eukaryotic transcription preinitiation complex.{{cite journal | vauthors = Kim B, Nesvizhskii AI, Rani PG, Hahn S, Aebersold R, Ranish JA | title = The transcription elongation factor TFIIS is a component of RNA polymerase II preinitiation complexes | journal = Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America | volume = 104 | issue = 41 | pages = 16068–73 | date = October 2007 | pmid = 17913884 | doi = 10.1073/pnas.0704573104 | doi-access = free | pmc = 2042163 | bibcode = 2007PNAS..10416068K }} A homolog in archaea performs the same main task, while bacteria use the non-homologous Gre.{{cite journal |last1=Robinson |first1=Nicholas P. |last2=Fouqueau |first2=Thomas |last3=Blombach |first3=Fabian |last4=Cackett |first4=Gwenny |last5=Carty |first5=Alice E. |last6=Matelska |first6=Dorota M. |last7=Ofer |first7=Sapir |last8=Pilotto |first8=Simona |last9=Phung |first9=Duy Khanh |last10=Werner |first10=Finn |title=The cutting edge of archaeal transcription |journal=Emerging Topics in Life Sciences |date=14 December 2018 |volume=2 |issue=4 |pages=517–533 |doi=10.1042/ETLS20180014|pmid=33525828 |pmc=7289017 |doi-access=free }}
