TVGuide.co.uk is a British television listings website.

History

The creators of TVGuide.co.uk envisioned people searching and watching television online, which the website cites as the reason they registered the domain name.{{cite web|title=About TVGuide.co.uk|url=http://www.tvguide.co.uk/aboutus.asp|work=TVGuide.co.uk|publisher=(Imano)|accessdate=4 March 2014|archive-date=28 February 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140228081206/http://tvguide.co.uk/aboutus.asp|url-status=live}} In 2007, the brand's chief executive officer was Chetan Damani. The website was relaunched to include user-generated content and a new format: the television listings grid. It also enabled users to customise the guide to hide channels unavailable to them. Sister company Imano were commissioned to develop the changes.{{cite web|title=TV listings site relaunches with user-generated content focus|url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-162443220.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140611075013/http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-162443220.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=11 June 2014|work=New Media Age|publisher=Centaur Media |date=19 April 2007}} By 2008, TVGuide.co.uk had over one million unique users.

TVGuide.co.uk entered a partnership with TVCatchup to allow their users to watch television online without leaving their website.{{cite web|title=Portals and publishers vie for online TV supremacy|url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-211333823.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140611075011/http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-211333823.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=11 June 2014|work=New Media Age|publisher=Centaur Media |access-date=4 March 2014|date=5 November 2009}} The brand later released their service as an application for Apple and Android devices.{{cite web|title=TVGuide.co.uk TV Guide|url=https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tvguide-co-uk-tv-guide/id317212648|work=iTunes|publisher=(Apple Inc.)|access-date=4 March 2014|date=4 January 2014|archive-date=16 June 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190616213027/https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/tvguide-co-uk-tv-guide/id317212648|url-status=live}}{{cite web|title=TVGuide.co.uk TV Guide UK|url=https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acrossair.tvguideuk&hl=en_GB|work=Google Play|publisher=(Google)|accessdate=4 March 2014|date=8 February 2014|archive-date=11 November 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131111194747/https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.acrossair.tvguideuk&hl=en_GB|url-status=live}} The application was originally designed by Imano.{{cite web|title=Case Study: TVGuide Mobile Apps|url=http://www.imano.com/CaseStudy/1156/Case-Study-TVGuide-Mobile-Apps|work=Imano|accessdate=4 March 2014|archive-date=5 March 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140305020827/http://www.imano.com/CaseStudy/1156/Case-Study-TVGuide-Mobile-Apps|url-status=live}}

TVGuide.co.uk's use of deep linking has caused problems with British broadcasters. In March 2008, ITV and BBC hired lawyers to investigate the legality of TVGuide.co.uk linking directly to their video content.{{cite web|title=Broadcasters seek legal advice on video linking|url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-177309085.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140611075007/http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-177309085.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=11 June 2014|work=New Media Age|publisher=Centaur Media |access-date=4 March 2014|date=27 March 2008}} ITV later devised a strategy to prevent the website and similar websites from doing so, fearing profit loss. The broadcaster along with Channel 4 also altered their streaming services to block the deep linking.{{cite web|title=Broadcasters in talks to stop TV listings sites deep-linking|url=http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-181886140.html|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140611074958/http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-181886140.html|url-status=dead|archive-date=11 June 2014|work=New Media Age|publisher=Centaur Media|access-date=4 March 2014|date=24 July 2008}}
