In January 2013, Mazaheri was interrogated at Düsseldorf Airport by German police due to not informing the authorities in advance that he carried a 300 million Venezuelan bolívar cheque (nearly $70 million).{{cite news|last=Habibinia|first=Omid|title=Iran-Venezuela ties: win-win game for reformists and conservatives|url=http://www.yourmiddleeast.com/columns/article/iranvenezuela-ties-winwin-game-for-reformists-and-conservatives_13490|accessdate=21 June 2013|newspaper=Your Middle East|date=29 April 2013}}{{cite news|title=Iran's ex-central bank chief caught entering Germany with 45mln pounds cheque|url=http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Iran's+ex-central+bank+chief+caught+entering+Germany+with+45mln...-a0317411412|accessdate=21 June 2013|newspaper=Asian News International|date=4 February 2013|location=London}}

It was later noted that the cheque belonged to an Iranian building company to cover its expenses while building public housing in Venezuela and Mazaheri was bringing the check for the company.{{cite news|title= Diplomat: Check was for Iranian Company's work|url=http://newsok.com/article/feed/496661}}
