Career

Graduating from Waseda University, Katō first became a middle school teacher, but then joined the Bungakuza theater troupe in 1952.{{cite web|title=Katō Takeshi|url=https://kotobank.jp/word/%E5%8A%A0%E8%97%A4%E6%AD%A6-1066096|website=Kotobanku|publisher=Asahi Shinbun|accessdate=6 March 2015|language=Japanese}} Beyond appearing in and directing plays on stage, he also appeared in films by such directors as Akira Kurosawa, Shohei Imamura, Kon Ichikawa, and Kiriro Urayama.
