Prior to the current public library opening in 1911, the community was served by a small lending library, known as the Takoma Club and Library. That library opened May 1, 1900 on Oak Avenue, across from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad station. The current Takoma Park Branch was built at 416 Cedar Street, NW using a $40,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie.{{cite book|title=Takoma Park: Historic American series|date=2011|publisher=Arcadia|isbn=9781439641453|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wif0gtVKz1oC|accessdate=11 January 2016}} The building is one of four Carnegie-funded library buildings in Washington, D.C.{{cite web|title=Takoma Park Library History|url=http://dclibrary.org/node/738|publisher=DC Public Library|accessdate=10 January 2016}}{{cite book|title=Public Library of the District of Columbia Annual Report|date=1908|publisher=Public Library of the District of Columbia|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=hSdFAQAAMAAJ|accessdate=11 January 2016}} The current library stands in the Takoma Park National Register Historic District designated in 1983.
