Geography

The locality of Ellinthorp is entirely contained within the boundaries of Talgai.{{Queensland Globe|access-date=10 November 2023}} This is quite unusual in Queensland which does not normally permit such a containment, requiring all localities to have at least two neighbours.{{Cite web|url=https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/place-names/naming/boundaries|title=How places are named: Defining boundaries and extent: Locality boundaries|date=28 October 2016|publisher=Queensland Government|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180111044841/https://www.qld.gov.au/environment/land/place-names/naming/boundaries|archive-date=11 January 2018|url-status=live|access-date=11 January 2018}}

The South Western railway line enters the locality from the north (Elphinstone/Allora) and exits to the south-east (Hendon). The Ellinthorp railway station is an abandoned railway station on the line ({{coord|-28.0486|151.9240|type:railwaystation_region:AU-QLD|name=Ellinthorp railway station}}), which, despite the name, is in Talgai but immediately east of the town of Ellinthorp.{{Cite web |date=2 October 2020 |title=Railway stations and sidings - Queensland |url=https://www.data.qld.gov.au/dataset/transport-features-queensland-series/resource/84fff9a0-e315-4844-9c4d-63934562a9bd |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201005070354/https://www.data.qld.gov.au/dataset/transport-features-queensland-series/resource/84fff9a0-e315-4844-9c4d-63934562a9bd |archive-date=5 October 2020 |access-date=5 October 2020 |website=Queensland Open Data |publisher=Queensland Government}}{{Cite QPN|11542|Ellinthorp|railway station in the Southern Downs Region|access-date=4 November 2024}}

History

The locality name derives from the pastoral run name established by G. Gammie who arrived on the Condamine River with stock on 9 March 1841.

Talgai West Provisional School opened on 22 September 1902. On 17 April 1916, it became Talgai West State School. It experienced a number of temporary closures due to low student numbers. On 1 July 1920, it became a half-time provisional school in conjunction with Deuchar Provisional School (meaning a single teacher was shared between the two schools). The school closed on 31 October 1921, reopening on 19 July 1922 as a full-time school. It closed on 27 August 1962, briefly reopened and closed permanently in 1963.{{Citation|author1=Queensland Family History Society|title=Queensland schools past and present|publication-date=2010|edition=Version 1.01|publisher=Queensland Family History Society|isbn=978-1-921171-26-0}} It was on the south-eastern side of Dalrymple Creek Road ({{Coord|-28.04236|151.88648|type:edu_region:AU-QLD|name=Talgai West State School (former)}}).{{Cite web |date=1931 |title=Parish of North Toolburra |url=https://apps.information.qld.gov.au/data/v2/HistoricalMaps/StaticMap/cadastral/cad-map-40chain-parish-north-toolburra-1931/original |access-date=10 November 2023 |publisher=Queensland Government |type=Map}}
