  • Soft oppose. I am in favor of unifying the structure, but don't want to add confusion. As such, two things: 1) can we change "senatorial district" to "Senate district" and use "2025 New York's 22nd Senate district special election" etc. instead? "Senate district" is more plain language, plus it's a verbiage I've heard more in reporting (eg [https://www.nysenate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2025/peter-oberacker/senator-oberacker-sworn-third-term-representing-new here]), and one of your examples (2023 Virginia's 7th Senate district special election) uses the same wording. It could vary state by state whether reliable sourcing or official language uses the adjectival form for districts.

:2) This I don't have an ideal solution for and could be persuaded otherwise—but the lettered districts in Minnesota's house don't parse clearly because they can't use ordinals - "Minnesota's 40B House of Representatives district" just doesn't work like a regular numbered district does and you can't exactly say "40Bth". Without ordinal numbers, it becomes really confusing to put the word "district" after the name—"the 40B district" isn't commonly used and is rather awkward. Consistency is best, I agree, but the current wording is a lot more clear to the reader in those particular cases. I just wonder if there's a better option…or if having Minnesota's house (and not senate) as an outlier would be a big issue ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 03:12, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

::{{ping|Malvoliox}} I don't mind replacing "senatorial district" with Senate district; I only used senatorial as there appeared to be a bit of consensus on California's 1st senatorial district to use "senatorial" (and I personally don't really like the word "senatorial", but that's the conclusion the discussion came to so that what I went with). The Minnesota one I agree is strange and I was considering whether or not to leave it out of this discussion entirely, but I decided to include it to try and get a consensus on it before even more articles were created. To my understanding, per WP:LOWERCASE, the word "district" should be lowercase (e.g. 2025 Minnesota House of Representatives district 40B special election), but I could be reading it wrong. It is worth nothing that the two Minnesota House districts that have articles use the form I suggested (e.g. Minnesota's 32B House of Representatives district), and that's what I based my suggestion on, but they appear to have just been moved by someone around 2 1/2 years ago, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.  RONIN  TALK  03:37, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:::That californi discussion feels strange—people did bring up the point that most other states use the more concise "State Senate district" form (only exception at the time was Ohio, and the move discussion was from "State Senatorial district" to "senatorial district"…I'd say it's more the standard across the board to call them "senate districts"

I've seen "State Senate", "Senate", and "senatorial" all be used in news articles to describe senate districts. :::::Forgot to add that it also appears to change based on the state. I believe California and Pennsylvania both use "senatorial", while most of the others do "State Senate" or "Senate"; I haven't looked at all of the states so I'm not sure which ones, but the word used to describe senate districts generally seems to vary by state.  RONIN  TALK  04:29, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

  • Oppose moves to senatorial district. I never saw such phrasing used in much coverage on the topic. I have no preference on the other proposed moves, I simply copied the format of the Minnesotan special elections when naming these articles. Longestview (talk) 06:52, 19 May 2025 (UTC)

  • ::I gave an example in my comment. The current title is crystal clear and unambiguous even at a glance: It's a "special election" in "District 11" of the "Alabama House of Representatives" in "2025", no apostrophes or ordinals. The proposal, on the other hand, at first glance could be read several ways: Is it the "11th" time in "2025" that Alabama is having a "district special election" for the [U.S.?] "House of Representatives"? Or maybe the first time for the "11th House of Representatives"? Or several other permutations? And, yes, of course, everyone will figure it out if they think about it, but there's simply no benefit to making the language less clear and straitforward that it is already.   • Oppose proposed titles like "2025 Alabama's ..." as awkward and hard to parse. Prefer "2025 special election in [district]" or "2025 special election for [seat]".
