Infobox image update

Hello, I'm Jakob and I work for Airbnb. I've created an account so I can suggest updates to Wikipedia articles related to the company, and I've disclosed my conflict of interest on this talk page and on my profile page.

I have worked to get the permission for :File:Brian Chesky Airbnb.jpg confirmed via OTRS. I'm now hoping an editor will replace the current infobox image with this one, which is higher quality and more recent.

Will an editor please update the infobox on my behalf? Thanks in advance. JK Airbnb (talk) 19:00, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

:{{Reply to|Zigzig20s}} I'm looking for an active editor to assist with this request to update the infobox with a higher quality and more recent photograph. I noticed you assessed this article years ago, and was wondering if you'd be willing to help. Thank you! JK Airbnb (talk) 17:40, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Partner in infobox

{{edit COI|D}}

Hello! I'm Charlie and I've taken over from Jakob as Airbnb's representative on Wikipedia. I've disclosed my conflict of interest and intend to only propose article improvements on Talk pages for editors to review.

For this request, I'd like to propose removing mention of Elissa Patel from the Partner(s) field in the infobox. While I'm struggling to find sourcing specifically confirming their separation, Brian and Elissa are no longer together. Additionally, : Template:Infobox person suggests this field should only be used if the partner is a notable individual. In this case, Elissa Patel does not have a Wikipedia article and therefore should not be linked in the infobox.

Does someone mind updating the article on my behalf? {{Reply to|Zigzig20s}} I see you've helped update the article previously, so I'm hoping you might be able to assist here? Thanks so much! CU Airbnb (talk) 22:05, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

:File:Red information icon with gradient background.svg Not done: Request denied for having no sources. Quetstar (talk) 04:35, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

:{{ping|CU Airbnb}} Hi Charlie, I think you make a good point about this not aligning with the guidance on the "partner" parameter at Template:Infobox person. However, this is still facially relevant information cited to a reliable source, so I am hesitant to remove it from the article altogether. My inclination would be to add it to the body of the article. Since it doesn't fit any of the existing sections, I would suggest creating a new "Personal life" section. What do you think? Colin M (talk) 19:49, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

::Hi Quetstar, I just found a source that may work: https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-30-billion-startup-2016-8#chesky-is-not-married-though-he-was-previously-in-a-relationship-with-artist-elissa-patel-chesky-has-a-golden-retriever-named-sir-richard-parker-who-hangs-out-at-airbnb-headquarters-and-accompanies-him-on-road-trips-13

::It specifically says: "Chesky is not married, though he was previously in a relationship with artist Elissa Patel."

::Could we use this to remove the mention? Thank you for your consideration! CU Airbnb (talk) 21:31, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

:::@CU Airbnb I am hesitant to use it because there is no consensus on the reliability of Business Insider. Quetstar (talk) 22:34, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Relationship request

{{Edit COI|answered=yes}}

Hi editors, I'm Paul and I work for Airbnb. I am submitting a request to remove mention of the relationship between Elissa Patel and Chesky in the Personal life section. They are no longer together and have not been for some time. [https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-30-billion-startup-2016-8#in-november-2022-chesky-listed-a-guest-room-in-his-home-on-airbnb-featuring-a-queen-sized-bed-and-a-piece-of-airbnb-history-the-novelty-cereal-boxes-that-chesky-sold-in-2008-to-fund-the-early-days-of-the-company-chesky-told-outlets-he-would-make-cookies-and-go-to-the-gym-with-guests-22 Business Insider] mentions in this profile of Chesky that they are no longer together, a specific point they changed in 2020 ([https://web.archive.org/web/20201105173057/https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-30-billion-startup-2016-8 Nov. 5 archive link] and [https://web.archive.org/web/20201119122227/https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-ceo-brian-chesky-30-billion-startup-2016-8 Nov. 19 archive link] showing the change). The [https://marketrealist.com/p/brian-chesky-wife-elissa-patel-waverly-explainer/ Market Realist] article appears to have cited Chesky's incorrect Wikipedia article and does not seem to meet reliability standards for biographies, and the Conde Nast Traveler article was published in 2017.

I understand that when my colleague Charlie tried to get this fact removed in 2021 that there were concerns over how reliable Business Insider was. I think for something like this, the article subject should be considered a reliable source based on my reading of the rules on self-published sources. In this case, Chesky talked about being single on the podcast [https://open.spotify.com/episode/7or1UO7wBx7EhDteufI9lb?si=8a95014746fe4410 Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard]. The discussion specifically comes around the 55 minute mark, with Chesky saying there wasn't "a lot" going on with him romantically around the 55:25 mark and Shepard saying "I don't mean to shame you for being single" at around the 56:40 mark. I hope this is sufficient. Please let me know. PY Airbnb (talk) 22:44, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Early life request

{{Edit COI|answered=yes}}

Hello editors, I had some additional requests for the article if anyone was interested. For my first request, I'd like to suggest replacing the second paragraph of the Early life and education section with the following:

{{box|Chesky graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in industrial design.{{Cite news |url=https://www.businessinsider.com/brian-chesky-airbnb-ceo-life-story-photos-2017-7 | title=The fabulous life of Airbnb's Brian Chesky, one of the youngest and richest tech founders in America | last=Hartmans | first=Avery | work=Business Insider | date=July 22, 2017}}{{Cite press release | url=https://www.risd.edu/news/for-press/press-releases/airbnb-co-founder-ceo-and-head-community-brian-chesky-deliver-keynote | title=Airbnb Co-Founder, CEO and Head of Community Brian Chesky to Deliver Keynote Address at Rhode Island School of Design's 2017 Commencement | publisher=Rhode Island School of Design | date=May 19, 2017}} While studying at RISD, Chesky was influenced by the works of Charles Eames, Ray Eames, and the work of Walt Disney.{{Cite book |last=Stone |first=Brad | authorlink=Brad Stone (journalist) | title=The Upstarts | date=2017 | publisher=Little, Brown and Company |isbn=978-0-316-38839-9 | pages=213, 326}}{{cite news |title=Airbnb’s Brian Chesky: ‘The trick is to be optimistic’ |work=Financial Times |date=May 1, 2021 |last1=Lee |first1=Dave |access-date=March 18, 2024 |url=https://www.ft.com/content/d42ae8b5-4723-4327-8dd9-13d4b699dbd9}} He was captain of the RISD hockey team and in his early 20s was a competitive bodybuilder.

This does a couple of things, primarily adding that he was captain of the RISD hockey team and condensing the opening sentence. It also removes that he met Joe Gebbia at RISD from this section. In my next request, I plan to ask to add that information back in the opening paragraph of the Career section, where I think it will flow better and allow for better contextual understanding for the reader. Please let me know what you think! Because of my COI I can't make this change myself. PY Airbnb (talk) 03:33, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Career request

Hi editors, for my next request, I suggest removing the Airbnb subheading and replacing the first three paragraphs with the following:

{{box|After graduating from RISD, Chesky moved to Los Angeles to work as an industrial designer.{{cite news |title=Welcome to the ‘Sharing Economy’ |last1=Friedman |first1=Thomas L. |work=The New York Times |date=July 20, 2013 |access-date=March 20, 2024 |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/21/opinion/sunday/friedman-welcome-to-the-sharing-economy.html}} In October 2007, he moved to San Francisco to live with RISD classmate Joe Gebbia. Chesky didn't have enough money to pay his rent, and decided with Gebbia to open their house to short-term renters. His move to San Francisco coincided with the Industrial Designers Society of America conference, which ran out of hotel rooms. The pair decided to open the house they were renting as a bed and breakfast, providing air mattresses for guests to sleep on and Pop-Tarts for breakfast. The business became Airbnb.

{{reflist-talk}}

  • The missing citation is once again the Fortune article already cited in the article.}}

{{ping|ARandomName123}} this is where I suggest adding back content related to Joe Gebbia removed in the last request, with some tweaks that I think help it all flow better. Let me know what you think! PY Airbnb (talk) 20:22, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

Leadership style request

{{Edit COI|answered=yes}}

Hi editors, there's been a lot of coverage recently of Brian's management style (described as "founder mode" by Paul Graham) and I was curious what the community thought about adding a sentence to Brian's article with that included, maybe at the end of the Career section, something like this:

Paul Graham content alteration

{{Edit COI|answered=yes}}

Hi editors, I wanted to request a slight change to the content added in my last request.

Fortune ranking

{{Edit COI|answered=yes}}

Hi editors, I wanted to get your thoughts on adding a sentence about Brian ranking in Fortune{{'}}s "100 Most Powerful People in Business" list – he was 43rd on the 2024 list.

I propose adding a sentence to the Recognition section, something like this:

  • Fortune ranked Chesky No. 43 on its "100 Most Powerful People in Business" in 2024.{{cite web |title=100 Most Powerful People in Business: Brian Chesky |url=https://fortune.com/ranking/most-powerful-people/2024/brian-chesky/ |website=Fortune |access-date=February 5, 2025}}

  • Note: the missing source is [https://fortune.com/longform/brian-chesky-airbnb/ this Fortune article], which is cited in the previous section

This adds some additional info about Chesky's time at RISD and involvement with the school sports teams using a newly found Fast Company article and the existing sources. It also updates the MEL citation to be more complete and match the style of other citations. Please let me know what you think. PY Airbnb (talk) 16:57, 18 February 2025 (UTC)

:What does this information really tell us, does any of it matter? Slatersteven (talk) 16:57, 17 March 2025 (UTC)

::{{replyto|Slatersteven}} Great questions! I think this provides insight into Chesky's career at RISD, which matters in the same way it mattered to include that Fred Rogers was student council president or that Hilaria Baldwin was on her university ballroom dance team. I think it tells readers a bit about who Chesky is as a person, or at least who he was at the time.

::My proposal doesn't change what's there too much. The main addition is the sentence about being commencement speaker. I also propose to add a little more context about co-developing the RISD basketball and hockey teams, expanding on what is already there. The rest of the sentence about designing the mascot and the sentence about being captain of the hockey team is already present in the article, it's just been moved around and slightly reworded to flow better with the team development addition.

::Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! PY Airbnb (talk) 21:00, 18 March 2025 (UTC)

:::Lets see, Ms Baldwin was a Yoga instructor, and the fact she was on a dance team has some relevance to her subsequent career. Im am unsure what any of what you want to add tells us about his career, or when it started. Slatersteven (talk) 12:16, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

::::{{replyto|Slatersteven}} I thought co-creating two sports teams that compete intercollegiately might be relevant to creating a more complete picture. At any rate, I will leave that call for your and other editors. Thanks for the conversation! PY Airbnb (talk) 17:19, 20 March 2025 (UTC)

Career update 1

{{Edit COI|answered=yes}}

Hi editors, I propose expanding the Career section with more detail on the early days of Mr. Chesky's career and the creation of Airbnb. There is quite a bit of sourcing to support an expanded section, sourcing that specifically discusses actions Chesky took during Airbnb's founding and when he officially became CEO. I made a draft showing what I believe to be an accurate summary of those sources.

I recognize requesting an editor to review all of that at once would be a lot to ask, so I'll make smaller requests. The first of those requests is to replace the first sentence of the Career section with more detail. I've made a textdiff for the proposed change:

{{textdiff| After graduating from RISD, Chesky moved to Los Angeles to work as an industrial designer.{{cite news |last1=Friedman |first1=Thomas L. |date=July 20, 2013 |title=Welcome to the 'Sharing Economy' |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/21/opinion/sunday/friedman-welcome-to-the-sharing-economy.html |access-date=March 20, 2024 |work=The New York Times}}|Chesky moved to Los Angeles following graduation from RISD to work for 3DID as an industrial designer.{{cite book |last1=Gallagher |first1=Leigh |title=The Airbnb Story: How Three Ordinary Guys Disrupted an Industry, Made Billions... and Created Plenty of Controversy |date=2018 |publisher=Houghton Mifflin Harcourt |location=Boston |isbn=9780544952669 |edition=First Mariner Books}}{{rp|23–24}} He designed toys, guitars, medical equipment, and other items at 3DID. {{reflist-talk}}

Rendered out, it looks like this:

{{box|Chesky moved to Los Angeles following graduation from RISD to work for 3DID as an industrial designer.{{cite book |last1=Gallagher |first1=Leigh |title=The Airbnb Story: How Three Ordinary Guys Disrupted an Industry, Made Billions... and Created Plenty of Controversy |date=2018 |publisher=Houghton Mifflin Harcourt |location=Boston |isbn=9780544952669 |edition=First Mariner Books}}{{rp|23–24}} He designed toys, guitars, medical equipment, and other items at 3DID. {{reflist-talk}}

This proposal does several things:

  • It replaces the Friedman opinion column with two books by reputable journalists/authors, which I believe to be stronger sources
  • It expands on Chesky's early days in Los Angeles and provides more context for readers about what he did for work and why he left his job. I think those details are important for understanding the later creation of Airbnb

It's worth noting that the Brad Stone book The Upstarts is already cited in the article with a different ISBN. I've cited a slightly newer version. I would imagine they are largely the same, though page numbers may vary between the two versions.

Please let me know what you think! PY Airbnb (talk) 17:22, 20 March 2025 (UTC)

:@PY Airbnb: What is Gallagher 2018 p. 23-24 being used to support? As far as I can tell, it doesn't mention RISD or 3DID or anything related to that sentence. https://archive.org/details/airbnbstoryhowth0000gall/page/23/mode/2up?view=theater

:The rest is fine, though I would add an extra page (22-24) for that last sentence. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 00:28, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

::{{replyto|ARandomName123}} Thanks for taking a look! I wonder if it is an issue of different versions. The text on page 22 of the book on Internet Archive you shared appears on page 45 for me. I am using the [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01NCJRMQV Kindle version] for my reference. It is the First Mariner Books edition, updated in 2018, whereas the one on IA is from 2017. The Kindle version is also about 50 pages longer than the print edition, so some stuff might be stretched out in comparison. For reference, the specifics I was quoting from each page are:

::*Once in Los Angeles, Chesky moved in with some friends from RISD and started working at the industrial-design firm 3DID. For the first few months he liked the work, designing real products for companies like ESPN and Mattel. But soon it started to become evident that the job wasn’t what he’d hoped it would be.

::*He hadn’t taken to Los Angeles, either. "I spent an hour and a half each way [to work] in a car, an empty car," he recalls. He felt disillusioned—and that he'd made the wrong choice. "I felt my life was, like, I was in a car, and I could see the road disappearing into the horizon in front of me, and I could see the same view in the rearview mirror," he later told Sarah Lacy, the technology journalist and founder of PandoDaily, in a fireside chat in 2013. "It was, like, 'Oh, this is all I'll end up doing. I guess it wasn't like they said it would be at RISD.'"

::Happy to add an extra page for the last! With that it would be:

{{box|Chesky moved to Los Angeles following graduation from RISD to work for 3DID as an industrial designer.{{cite book |last1=Gallagher |first1=Leigh |title=The Airbnb Story: How Three Ordinary Guys Disrupted an Industry, Made Billions... and Created Plenty of Controversy |date=2018 |publisher=Houghton Mifflin Harcourt |location=Boston |isbn=9780544952669 |edition=First Mariner Books}}{{rp|23–24}} He designed toys, guitars, medical equipment, and other items at 3DID. Career update 2

{{edit COI|p|C}}

Hi editors, following up on the previous request, I propose making the following update to the second paragraph of the Career section:

{{textdiff|In October 2007, he moved to San Francisco to live with RISD classmate Joe Gebbia. Chesky did not have enough money to pay his rent, and they opened their house to short-term renters as a bed and breakfast, providing air mattresses for guests to sleep on and Pop-Tarts for breakfast during the Industrial Designers Society of America conference, when hotel rooms were scarce. The business became Airbnb.{{cite news |last1=Friedman |first1=Thomas L. |date=July 20, 2013 |title=Welcome to the 'Sharing Economy' |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/21/opinion/sunday/friedman-welcome-to-the-sharing-economy.html |access-date=March 20, 2024 |work=The New York Times}} | Former classmate Joe Gebbia, with whom Chesky had worked on a summer project at RISD, contacted Chesky in 2007 with an invitation to become roommates in San Francisco. This corrects the month of moving (October to September), the conference name, improves the phrasing around reuniting with Joe Gebbia, and replaces an op-ed with the Gallagher book as a stronger source. The new content looks like this:

{{box| Former classmate Joe Gebbia, with whom Chesky had worked on a summer project at RISD, contacted Chesky in 2007 with an invitation to become roommates in San Francisco. • Note: Source 3 is the Gallagher book already cited in the article, and Source 4 is the Stone book already cited

If editors are interested, I have created a draft page showing what I hope to change the Career section to, though the page numbers for the Gallagher book in the draft page utilize the Kindle page numbers rather than the pages of the copy on Internet Archive. {{ping|ARandomName123}} would you have any interest in reviewing this request? I have updated the page numbers for Gallagher in this request to reflect the IA copy. Please let me know what you think! PY Airbnb (talk) 21:37, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

:@PY Airbnb: Looks fine for the most part, but a transition to the end should be added to introduce the company, something along the lines of what is currently in the article. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:54, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

::{{replyto|ARandomName123}} thanks for taking a look! I was going to put that transition in the next paragraph, but it could be combined into this one. I was going to add the specific change to the name "Airbnb" a little later to better fit with the timeline of the company's history. Here's what I was thinking for the next paragraph:

::*Gebbia and Chesky asked Nathan Blecharczyk to work on a new website for the company, then known as Airbed & Breakfast.  It launched before 2008's South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Chesky was one of two bookings for the event, at which he met Michael Seibel, who would later connect Chesky with Y Combinator.  The company re-launched again before the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. Chesky targeted microblogs to advertise the service. It generated 80 bookings, which were paid for via a PayPal account. PayPal froze the account after deeming the activity suspicious.

::Together, and with all the citations, it looks like this:

Early days of Airbnb request update

{{edit COI}}

Hi editors, after the discussion above I thought it best to close the previous request and repost with the full context for better clarity of what is being asked for.

(sources here are again the Gallagher and Stone books, respectively, with Gallagher updated to the IA page numbers)

This does several things:

  • Corrects the month of moving
  • Improves context related to the relationship with Gebbia
  • Replaces an opinion piece with the book sources
  • Adds a paragraph with more context on Chesky's early efforts to found the company, work with Nathan Blecharczyk, connection to Michael Seibel, advertising at the 2008 DNC, and notes the early name of the company

Please let me know what you think! {{ping|ARandomName123}} I think this should help with your concern about the company name, but let me know if you'd like to see other changes! Cheers PY Airbnb (talk) 18:47, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

:@PY Airbnb: This part is a bit confusing, and is a run-on. Also this may be just me, but I would make the connection between the booking and the company more clear.: {{tq|It launched before 2008's South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Chesky was one of two bookings for the event, at which he met Michael Seibel, who would later connect Chesky with Y Combinator.}}

:{{tq|Chesky targeted microblogs to advertise the service.}} This makes it seem like the microblogs were the only thing that generated the 80 bookings.

:{{tq|PayPal froze the account after deeming the activity suspicious.}} And then... ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 02:40, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

::{{ping|ARandomName123}} thanks for the feedback! I can certainly add a little more detail here that should clear things up. What do you think about this?

::I think that makes things more clear. I removed the part about PayPal payments. Upon further reflection, that detail seemed less significant. Including it would look something like this I think:

::*Payments were collected via PayPal, which froze the founders' account after deeming the sudden payment spike suspicious. Blecharczyk contacted customer support to restore the account while Gebbia and Chesky assuaged customer concerns. Payments were completed by the end of the weekend.{{r|"Gallagher"|p=20}}

::::@PY Airbnb: {{Partly done}} On second thought, the sentence {{tq|Chesky targeted microblogs to advertise the service, which led to a trickle-up to larger Denver-area publications including the Denver Post, then national publications including The New York Times. }} makes it seem like Chesky was the one to do this, when the source attributes it to the founders as a group "they...".
