How about a little trimming?

Greetings, all. The article is approximately 20 thousand words long. This seems rather excessive, when we consider that, for instance, the Tupac Shakur biography is a lot less than that. Not to mention that poor ol' Beethoven has only about a dozen thousand words and Ray Charles 10 thousand. What say you about trimming it down a bit? Unless we are the person's agent, do we really need so much detail in the text? -The Gnome (talk) 15:21, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

:It's in an odd tone, too. It reads like a PR company put it together. 2407:7000:859A:B300:7954:D086:EE75:323B (talk) 06:56, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

::Yup, this article definitely has some bias or whatnot in it. Someone was probably paid to write this Rynoip (talk) 10:24, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

:::Not paid at all MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 13:19, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

:::* MarioSoulTruthFan, you do not know that and no one knows that. You could only claim that if you were the sole contributor to the article. -The Gnome (talk) 14:35, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

:::*Hello @MarioSoulTruthFan, I saw you reverted my most recent edit, however, I do not see any issues replacing the sources with news sources and trimming down and clarifying the text into a less confusing manner. Rynoip (talk) 20:13, 9 February 2025 (UTC)

:::::The sources there were fine and cover what you wrote. I ended up using most of your text if you take a look MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 19:02, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

:I added {{template|Section sizes}} to the top of this page. Where are you getting 20 thousand words? At my count it's half that. The information under the heading "Endorsements and partnerships" is far too detailed IMO, has WP:PROSELINE issues, and also probably needs updating. Reconrabbit 16:39, 10 February 2025 (UTC)

::I added it to GOCE. They will help with it MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 19:00, 13 February 2025 (UTC)

:::Link to the request at GOCE. -The Gnome (talk) 14:46, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

:::{{ping|The Gnome}} and {{ping|Reconrabbit}} the GOCE has been completed. I might do more trimming over the next couple of weeks. How does it look? MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 01:15, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

:::*I am not very familiar with the whole article but the parts I was especially concerned about are fixed up very nicely. Reconrabbit 01:34, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

:::*Good work. We are still at over 19 thousand words (per Word count) though, which was inevitable given the fact that, while some of us were trimming, others (or sometimes some trimmers!) were piling on. Methinks, we still have our work cut out for us. Thanks, everyone. -The Gnome (talk) 14:32, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

:::*:I have been trimming it more. Removing unnecessary stuff or not relevant. MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 18:15, 24 February 2025 (UTC)

  • Update (March 2025): With the word count now standing atthe respectable count of almost 17,000 words, our trimming can be reasonably assessed as complete. Some prose still contaminated by puffery remains, but that, no doubt, will be met by our fellow contributors' scalpel. Take care, all. -The Gnome (talk) 21:00, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
  • :Should the multiple issues template be removed from the top of the article then?
  • :Bowling is life (talk) 00:14, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

:::I agree, at least for two out of three issues raised. Done. -The Gnome (talk) 09:08, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

Will there be a stop to the puffery?

There is a continuous, incessant crusade to puff up the text with the smallest of details and the strongest of puffery. And this is particularly annoying in the lead section. Enough is enough. Can we hope for these attempts to cease and the aficionados to desist? This is a sincere call to encyclopaedic sanity and an genuine attempt at inviting good faith, people. -The Gnome (talk) 23:13, 15 March 2025 (UTC)

:I'm glad you started this discussion at last. I don't disagree with you that the first paragraph does not need any changes indeed. It is also true that mentioning his other ventures (rum brand and one voice role) is not necessary. The rest, however, was in fact incomplete prior to the changes I just made. If you'd like me to elaborate:

  • "Mars' first three studio albums found critical and commercial success, with the latter winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year." - How does that sentence even make sense to you?? What does "the latter" mean if you don't mention the supposedly successful albums in the first place?? Naming the albums is crucial.
  • "He also featured on Mark Ronson's 2014 single "Uptown Funk", which became Billboard's best-performing song of the 2010s." - This is not at all puffery. "Uptown Funk" topped Billboard's Decade-End chart, surpassing every other song released during the 2010s, similarly to Mariah Carey's "One Sweet Day" in the 1990s and "We Belong Together" in the 2000s - both are mentioned in the lead on her page despite the fact that her career is longer and there are many more achievements to mention. It is his most successful single and it would be unfair to include "Nothin' on You" or "Leave the Door Open" in the lead, while excluding "Uptown Funk".
  • "He scored nine Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles." - not puffery either. This is regularly mentioned in the lead for musicians who found success on the Hot 100. If you check out the list of Billboard Hot 100 chart achievements and milestones, you'll find out that Mars is one of only few male singers to have nine singles top the chart.
  • You can't continously use "he" in every paragraph. -Hubert555 (talk) 17:00, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
  • :Thank you Hubert! Someone gets it MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 11:37, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
