Name

I think the full name is Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number, so I redirected it here. Should the article be moved to the full name? The abbreviated name is far more common. -- Kjkolb 09:44, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

:[http://www.cas.org/EO/regsys.html Cas.org] itself uses the registered trademark "CAS Registry Number®". I'd say keep it. The capitalization doesn't match though. However since it will usually be used descriptively in the articles and not as a proper noun, that seems fine too for our purposes. Femto 14:10, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

::Okay, thanks. I've been working on topics that other encyclopedias and other sources have and Wikipedia doesn't, so I've been asking a lot of questions on talk pages when I'm not sure about something. :-) Kjkolb 16:04, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

Categorizing chemical substances and providing structures as data files

  • In my opinion all chemical substances should be provided as data files, preferably as (compressed) Chemical Markup Language and/or Chemical table files including all informations, like CAS, physicochemical data, etc.
  • All those entries should be categorized, which will allow any mining scheme to collect informations from those files.

Well, did they?

"The Chemical Abstracts Service has announced on its web site that it will add an additional digit to new CAS registry numbers, starting about January 2008."

It's November 2008 now, did they add the digit? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr-spangle (talkcontribs) 19:50, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

:Yes, all this means is that there are now CAS numbers that look like 1XXXXXXX-XX-X. I have already run across a few. 67.52.10.186 (talk) 04:13, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

At least another authentic search engine for CAS number is needed....

for verification--222.64.219.35 (talk) 02:18, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

I found this service is not biased for this chemical

Here's another one that I typically use in my in work as a chemist. http://webbook.nist.gov/chemistry/ 2001:1998:860:1002:C1AF:6809:336F:FEA8 (talk) 16:58, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

IUPAC name in CAS search engine...???

Unfortunately, I can find nil in the ones listed in the article and those engines needs to be improved, in regards to IUPAC names--222.64.218.82 (talk) 03:46, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

The definition of the title....

needs to be verified, as it is critical to the associated industries. Because pure chemicals are very different to their mixtures--222.64.26.62 (talk) 00:21, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

The traceability of wiki editions are not very good....

Call for reviewing the page of [[Glycerol monostearate]], as....

for the first time, I have come across that a cas number varies with a chemical grade.

Is it a new rule....???

Technical Question

I attempted to simplify the article by merging some topics and redundancies.

Unfortunately WP doesnt clarify the meaning of all terms in the article-and I have limited technical knowledge.

I am uncertain whether "WP:Coordination complex" is generally equivalent to the CAS' coordination compound- as suggested by a previous editor.

But WP does not define "coordination compound". While it seems highly likely, I am uncertain whether the article's first sentence [which I constructed] is generally true.

If not, I'd appreciate illumination.Hilarleo Hey,L.E.O. 22:39, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

Ownership

"A User or Organization may include, without a license and without paying a fee, up to 10,000 CAS Registry Numbers or CASRNs in a catalog, web site, or other product for which there is no charge."

So, doesn't Wikipedia (including Wikidata) contain more than 10,000 CASRNs already? (don't talk secrets) (talk) 11:53, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

:That statement does not rule out getting permission to use more than 10000 CAS numbers without a fee. It is probably debatable whether that provision could be legally enforced as well. In any case, at one point there were discussions between WikiProject Chemistry participants and Chemical Abstracts. You could ask there if you are interested in the details. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Cost of Registering

I think it would be an important addition to find out the cost of obtaining a CAS number from an IUPAC named compound. Unless you are in the commercial or research fields, they are totally unhelpful about the costs. I think it also worth noting that there are many examples of compounds having more than 1 CAS number. Can someone help on this one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.99.74.135 (talk) 16:52, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
