:A chaldron seems to be nothing else than pointed out in this article: an obsolete measure. It looks to me like Lethem made the word (and subject) up. I mean, it is a work of fiction in the end. So NYC is not only without a tiger, it seems like there are no chaldrons on this planet. Reminds me of Philip K. Dick's 2000 year old clay and pottery jars.
