The main ideas behind computing the Characteristic variety are contained in https://www.math.utah.edu/~milicic/Eprints/dmodules.pdf
Namely, the procedure is to
- Using the filtered ring structure on the ring of differential operators to construct an associated graded ring
- Construct an induced filtration on the modules, and consider the associated graded module
- Compute the support/the annihilator of this module. Spec of the radical of this ideal will give the characteristic variety
