In the comment about the poles cracking the enigma cyphertext-only w/ the device settings … the device settings are the key so I don't see how this even qualifies as an attack. 66.188.120.75 (talk) 00:11, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
:Actually, Enigma was cracked using what is called "known-plaintext attack" or maybe "chosen-plaintext attack". That is, the cryptanalysts at Bletchley Park assumed that some random message began with some known sentence/part of sentence and then they used that to guess the key.
