The present population of the town is approximately 15,000. Unemployment now stands at about 20%.

With the development of coal mining, the local population increased dramatically: according to the national Census Returns, the population of Crook was 176 in 1811, 538 in 1841, 5,800 in 1861 and 11,098 in 1881.

::The population figure has been changed to a 2008 figure but there has been no change in the reference which gives no exact figure but just a guesstimate. :::I noticed that too (my Mam lives in Crook, so I've started watching this page), and so I requested some info from the Wear Valley DC folks in Crook. They have been kind enough to supply contacts and information, and I've added a link to one into the external links section of the article. I'll need to contact some Durham people directly to get the latest data, but in the meantime, would anyone mind if I change the population to 8212 (in 2001)? I tried to look for more sources, but everything I find on Google to wikipedia or is a mirror site. I think using 2001 census (or the most recent data available) would be better than using estimates, until more up-to-date sources are found. --Unpopular Opinion (talk · contribs) 17:26, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

There seem to be more references to Bishop Auckland claiming this description than Crook. Ed1964 (talk) 12:43, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
