Regarding merge request
I think the new article should be speedied. It adds nothing substantive to this existing page. BusterD 01:45, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
:I didn't read it but if you think so, I'll just make it redirect here. The info will be in the page history if there's anything to salvage and redirects are cheap. Katr67 01:55, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
Updating Some Content
I'm not sure I need to do this or if it is appropriate. I'm a battlefield guide/interpreter at Ball's Bluff, where Baker was killed. I am preparing a lecture about Baker, and Wikipedia was my starting point. I have expanded that research to more than 30 sources, and I believe I can improve the article by adding facts and references. I have already made a few changes in the Early Life section. Am I on the right track, or am I being too presumptuous? Tbowers1942 (talk) 15:03, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
::(No, no need to do it, but on the other hand it is not inappropriate.) I just looked over [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Edward_Dickinson_Baker&action=historysubmit&diff=476667580&oldid=465221117 your additions] and without checking the references myself, they look good. You are not being presumptuous at all, as Wikipedians are encouraged to Be Bold when updating articles. My only caveat, and it is a very small one, is to make sure there is no conflict of interest regarding your edits, because of your connection with Ball's Bluff. I doubt there is any reason for concern but I like to mention it to people. You might also check in with the military history project linked above. I hope you will stick around! And as an aside, oh boy, is that "Honors" section a mess...but that has nothing to do with your edits. Valfontis (talk) 17:39, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
:::Thanks for the encouragement! After being a long-time Wikipedia user, it's interesting to see how content is generated and vetted. I struggled a bit with having a reference source with multiple references, but I think I have it figured out. BTW, why are some citations under References and some under Notes? There was a lot of controversy about Baker's actions at Ball's Bluff, but I am staying away from all of that. In fact, most of my edits have to do with Baker's life and not the battle.Tbowers1942 (talk) 19:07, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
::Short answer to Notes vs. References--because this article is kind of a mess! Valfontis (talk) 19:26, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

:Edward Dickinson Baker → {{no redirect|Edward D. Baker}} – For simplicity and WP:COMMONNAME. "Edward Dickinson Baker" Oregon Senator gets about 4k Google results, while "Edward D. :Support - for more modern sources, Russel H. Beatie McClellan Takes Command has him as "Edward D. Baker". The section about Ball's Bluff in volume 1 of Frank Welcher's The Union Army: Organization and Operations also refers to him as Edward D. Baker. Anecdotally, this is more familiar form in other things that I have read as well. Hog Farm talk 17:51, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

:Support I'm rather fond of the distinctive middle name but after 20 years, I think there is enough content in the article to make it clear who he is without it. Per WP:COMMONNAME and g-hits. Valfontis (talk) 08:03, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
:Support, seems undcontroversial enough. Just leave a redirect. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 17:08, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
