Political party

Is there any source behind him being a registered independent? If the most recent source is from before 2022, would it be possible to find more up to date sources that either still support him being a registered independent or support him changing political affiliations? CY223 (talk) 00:05, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

:It's very, very safe to call him a Republican, calling him an independent is like Heinrich Himmler an independent who has no affiliation to the Nazi party. Dual The Eggist (talk) 19:23, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

Short Description

The current "short description" is 49 characters, which though not excessively long, it is also not that near the ideal "40 characters or under" that should be sought after whenever possible per WP:SDESC and WP:SD40. "{{tq|Short descriptions exceeding 40 characters may be truncated in some contexts}}". The current short description says, "{{tq|Businessman and U.S. political figure (born 1971)}}" I think it would be an improvement to either remove "U.S." from between the "and" and "political figure" due to the global impact Musk has been involved in (think Germany most recently). There might be other, better, suggestions on how to shorten it, and though this only removes 4 characters, it is an improvement over leaving it in, in my view. Iljhgtn (talk) 02:01, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

:I think the birth year can be removed. It can be an important disambiguation for some BLP articles, but Musk is extremely well known, and I'm not aware of specific need for date-based disambiguation here. As WP:SDDATES says, other information can be higher-priority than dates. WeyerStudentOfAgrippa (talk) 14:20, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

::How about this, "{{tq|Businessman, engineer and political figure}}"? That comes to 42 characters then and incorporates your idea of removing the birth year data point. Iljhgtn (talk) 14:26, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

:::What is the view on replacing "Businessman" with "entrepreneur"?Iljhgtn (talk) 22:48, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

:::He is not an engineer. This has been discussed several times already. BeŻet (talk) 09:55, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

::::To be precise, there is no consensus to call him an "engineer" in this article, in that he does not have professional engineer status and some people, particularly in the US, equate the two. See Q8 in the FAQ. So yes, a short description that refers to him as an engineer is very unlikely to find consensus. Rosbif73 (talk) 10:07, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::Thank you for clarifying further. BeŻet (talk) 12:37, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

::::::Fair enough. I have posed several other points still needing input:

::::::1. What do we think of removing, "U.S." before "political figure" since Musk does have global political clout influence?

::::::2. What do we think of replacing "Businessman" with "Entrepreneur"? Iljhgtn (talk) 14:45, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

::::::::Why, is he not a businessman? Slatersteven (talk) 14:48, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::::::Are businessman and entrepreneur mutually exclusive? I felt that one is more of the operator of businesses, whereas the latter is the creator and operator of them. My view then would be that Musk is more in the latter camp, and given that this is discussion around the SD alone, shorter is better, therefore not both. My $0.02. Iljhgtn (talk) 14:59, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::::::::I disagree, he seems to mainly be an investor. Who then takes over (rather than creates) companies. Slatersteven (talk) 15:11, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

::::::::::::Maybe so, then should we say, "Investor and political figure"? That is another version I had not yet considered. Iljhgtn (talk) 15:27, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::::::::::Buisnessman covers them all. But I feel like this is bludgeoning, So I agree to remove the birth year, but no other changes. And my last word. Slatersteven (talk) 15:30, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Deeper visa investigations.

For editors that are interested in editing this WP article, Kimbal Musk has admitted to being an illegal immigrant to the USA for a time and included brother Elon in that category, too, even though Elon tried to be evasive. The Herald article is especially in depth. ---

  • CNN - Points out the murkiness of the Musk brothers immigration status through the 1990s, into 2000s. - "Elon Musk is one of illegal immigration’s harshest critics. He once described his past immigration status as a ‘gray area’" https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/29/us/elon-musk-immigration-gray-area-cec/index.html
  • The New Zealand Herald - Details of the Musk brothers dodging to immigration laws. - "Elon Musk, enemy of ‘open borders’, launched his career working illegally" - https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/elon-musk-enemy-of-open-borders-launched-his-career-working-illegally/YXG4TFOAZRGY3OMH6JWY5URKHQ/
  • Milken Institute (independent, non-partisan economic think tank) - Video of an interview with the Musk brothers where Kimbal readily admits that he and Elon were illegal immigrants in the USA for a time. :question is dueness. do we need to document every possible discrepancy or scandal with elon musk? Bluethricecreamman (talk) 03:02, 22 April 2025 (UTC)

::Your point is well-taken, I don't think we need to list every last lawsuit against him for employment laws or business practices, but still, given that he's second in an administration that centers illegal immigration so much, the fact that he was here illegally seems important to note. MilesVorkosigan (talk) 22:20, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

:::Then maybe it would be better suited for Political activities of Elon Musk? ―Panamitsu (talk) 23:29, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
