Generally Accepting? I wonder

The article reads, 'New Zealanders are generally accepting of gays and lesbians, although low level homophobia (such as the use of the word 'gay' as an insult) is still common.' How accurate this is, I wonder. Perhaps it isn't totally accurate. I think high level homophobia is probably common (I have heard people scream anti-gay insults in public, and this in Ponsonby).
