I think it's probably that Roe 1995 got the meaning "sawbill duck" from Twedell 1953 "A Historical and Ethnological Study of the Snohomish Indian People". Tweddell wrote: "William Martin gave the name of the site [Index village] as x̌ə'x̌ausalt [x̌əx̌aʔusalʔtxʷ], from s'x̌aus [sx̌aʔus], 'sawbill duck.'" I assume Roe took this to mean that x̌əx̌aʔusalʔtxʷ = sawbill duck when Tweddell meant that the name x̌əx̌aʔusalʔtxʷ only derives from the word sx̌aʔus 'sawbill duck', which is correct. So I'll insert a statement that just says "the name is derived from sx̌aʔus, the word for "sawbill duck" in Lushootseed." with Tweddell as the source. I don't actually have the Roe book, so if it also supports that, please add that back to it as well. PersusjCP (talk) 01:31, 10 February 2025 (UTC)

:That is a fine compromise, but I would prefer not using such an old source; Roe has presumably verified that the information is still accurate (up to publication date), so it should be used. However, given that there is no mention of the other translations in the given Hollenbeck/Moss document, these also need to be removed to comply with verifiability standards.
