Younger picture in the infobox?
This is just my personal animus, so feel free to strike down with impunity, but does anyone else think a younger pic of Kobe in the infobox would be a good idea? Like, circa 2007-2010? 2014 he was past his prime and not indicative of how he's otherwise regarded. Shamus248 (talk) 20:59, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
:It's a good action shot with a clear view of his face. Which specific one(s) would you recommend as an alternative? —Bagumba (talk) 22:32, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
::it's awesome, don't get me wrong. I also can't find any that fit that specific criteria on the wikimedia commons, and obviously I can't just pull off google images or anything. Shamus248 (talk) 20:05, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
:::Yeah, that's pretty much the limitation. The positives of the picture outweigh the minor deterrent of his age, unless something new comes available. —Bagumba (talk) 20:14, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
::::{{ping|Bagumba}} my reversion was a misclick, but looking into it I do prefer the image added by {{u|Wcamp9}}. Deceased figures usually have—to quote {{noping|Tweedle}} from the discussion for Elizabeth II—"the most significant era of their life", which I must agree to be closer to 2005 than 2014. I also prefer the framing as it is more fitting for the layout of an infobox, and I disagree with your notion that shooting free throws is unfitting; shooting (be it a jumpshot or free throws) is ultimately the quintessential basketball move. DatGuyTalkContribs 16:28, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
:::::Bryant was known more for his dynamic moves on the court with a live ball, not standing on the free throw line. I wouldn't call the newly proposed photo "unfitting", just that the longstanding one seems more "natural". Neither is exactly a head and shoulders portrait that would be most ideal for a bio infobox. —Bagumba (talk) 16:40, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
For the record, [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kobe_Bryant&diff=prev&oldid=1285690914 here] is another image change that was rejected.—Bagumba (talk) 07:09, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
:And [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kobe_Bryant&diff=prev&oldid=1292799227 here] is another one I [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kobe_Bryant&diff=prev&oldid=1293177459 reverted]. The beginning of MOS:LEADIMAGE says: {{tq2| It is common for an article's lead or infobox to carry a representative image}} Its first bullet point further adds: {{tq2|Lead images should be natural and appropriate representations of the topic; they should not only illustrate the topic specifically, but also be the type of image used for similar purposes in high-quality reference works, and therefore what our readers will expect to see.}} It's reasonable to presume that typical high-quality references about Kobe use images of him handling a basketball during a game in a Lakers jersey. Left guide (talk) 05:24, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
::We could use this. This is an action shot which shows what he looked like at the peak of his career driving to the basket. It was taken in 2008, the year he won MVP. 2 years before that, Kobe scored 81 points on the Toronto Raptors. The year before that, he had a 4 game 50 point streka The year after that, he won a championship and followed it with another in 2010 winning Finals MVP twice. This image is best fit for the infobox in my opinion

:::I personally don't think that those distinctions matter much, since they're not aspects that are clearly illustrated in the photos anyways. MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE and MOS:IMAGEQUALITY are far more paramount. From that perspective, I see the yellow jersey typically providing a starker contrast, whereas a purple one (relatively speaking) blends in more to what is usually a dark background. We can see what others think though. Left guide (talk) 06:24, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

In § "Early Life", change
> and his father, Joe Bryant, who played eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
to
> and his father, Joe Bryant, played eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
for proper grammatical structure. As written, the adjective phrase describing Joe Bryant seems to imply that Kobe's mother and father are related.
