There was a pattern to the initial assignment of routes. Even routes ran east-west, odd routes ran north-south, and every other number was used.

• West of US 99, north to south: 10 14 18 22 26 (US 30) 34 38 42 46
• East of US 99, north to south: 50 54 58 62 66 70
• Near OR 11, north to south: 74 78
• Far eastern Oregon, north to south: 82 86 90
• East to west: 3 7 11 15 19 23 27 31 35 39 47 51

The only gap is OR 43, which does fit in its present location. Maybe this was OR 43 at first, rather than the strange piece of US 99 shown in 1935. There is also no OR 2 or OR 6.

Other early routes were added in-sequence:

• OR 8, 1936
• OR 32 was not in-sequence (1945)
• OR 36, 1936
• OR 52 was not in-sequence (1950)
• OR 52 was renumbered from OR 90 to match ID 52 (1952)
• OR 37 was not in-sequence (1976)
• OR 53, 1939

OR 99 and OR 126 were former U.S. Routes, OR 138 is a spur of OR 38, and OR 140 (1966) matches NV 140, which seems to have been renumbered at the same time. --NE2 03:47, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

• Oregon Route 208: Farmington Highway, Farmington to Beaverton, now OR 10 (confirmed on TerraServer-USA)
• Oregon Route 209: Crater Lake North Highway and Crescent Lake Highway, Crater Lake to Crescent Lake (confirmed on 1940 map)
• Oregon Route 215: Cascade Highway South, Molalla to Oregon City, now OR 213 (confirmed on 1940 map)
• Oregon Route 220: Sumpter Highway, Sumpter to Salisbury, now OR 410 and OR 7 (confirmed on 1962 map and TerraServer-USA)
• Oregon Route 222: North Santiam Highway, Salem to Santiam Junction, now OR 22 (confirmed on 1940 map)
• Oregon Route 225: Elkton-Sutherlin Highway, Sutherlin to Elkton, now OR 138 (confirmed on 1940 map)
• Oregon Route 231: Goshen-Divide Highway, Divide to Goshen, now OR 99
• Oregon Route 232: Sand Creek Highway, Crater Lake to Sun Pass (confirmed on [http://www.broermapsonline.org/members/NorthAmerica/UnitedStates/Northwest/randmcnally_ra_1946_017.html 1946 map])
• Sun Mountain Highway, Fort Klamath to south of Chemult (shown on 1962 map and TerraServer-USA)
• Oregon Route 235: Drain-Yoncalla Highway, Dillard to Drain, now OR 99
• Oregon Route 236: Lake of the Woods Highway, Eagle Point to Klamath Falls, now OR 140??

There are some issues on this page that I am going to clean up. There are some missing highways, incorrect entries, and incorrect nomenclature. Missing highways include former 111 Apiary Hwy outside of Rainier. Incorrect entries include OR138 North Umpqua being Hwy 138. Hwy 138 would be in Marion County. There is no OR223S. This would infer a southern route as is the case for OR42S. OR223S should be refered to as OR223Y since it is a spur and this is the state's nomenclature. Alright, scratch some of my prior comments. I hadn't realized that the state monkeys messed up the system even further by numbering a Douglas county Highway as a Marion County one. And yes I got highways and routes confused when I wrote OR223Y, but the nomenclature of 223S (for spur) can easily be confused with 42S (for southern route). Can we change how spurs are written here? Does anybody know what the deal is with these extra highways? I haven't been able to find if they are/were state highways or merely county highways:

Shaw Highway, Marion County

St. Paul Highway, Marion County

Mt. Angel Highway, Marion County (old Hill-Sil?)

Wilco Highway, Marion County (seems to be the portion of Hill-Sil from Woodburn to Mt. Angel)

Delta Highway, Lane County

Lorane Highway, Lane County (seems to share some routing with old Fox Hollow Highway and Terrtorial Highway)

Brownsboro Highway, Jackson County (based on old maps this is an old alignment of Lake of the Woods from Brownsboro to Eagle Point, but no idea whether it was retired to the county or retained by the state.)

Butte Falls Highway, Jackson County (AKA Butte Falls-Prospect Rd between those two towns. Possibly an initial routing of Crater Lake Highway? Same conundrum as Brownsboro Hwy)
