The Big Ship Sails

The song/ nursery rhyme "The big ship sails on the alley alley o" is allegedly by Elizabeth Matterson. But lots of people seem to think it's about the Manchester Ship Canal: see e.g. [https://www.gransnet.com/forums/chat/1321595-Where-was-the-Alley-Alley-O here] and [https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-18017,00.html here]? Seems like it featured in the 1961 film A Taste of Honey, sung in 1961 by The Corona Kids: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypyhhRHXSNk] (but that single credits John Addison as the writer, but I guess he was just the arranger). Any ideas? 205.239.40.3 (talk) 16:20, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
