New York Central purchase

The New York Central Railroad did not acquire the MTR in 1966 from Alcoa. While considered as the cited newspaper clipping is evidence of, the transaction never occurred and the Massena Terminal Railroad was never owned by the NYC or succoessors Penn Central, Conrail, or CSX. It remained Alcoa property until September 2005 when RailAmerica paid Alcoa $78 million to acquire the Massena Terminal Railroad, the Point Comfort & Northern Railway, the 'Rockdale, Sandow & Southern Railroad', and the Bauxite & Northern Railway. 2603:7081:C00:6077:53A:6F9D:81BE:A35B (talk) 23:57, 30 January 2025 (UTC)

:Do you have a source to support this? Trainsandotherthings (talk) 00:28, 31 January 2025 (UTC)

::Sure

::Here's two industry news reports on Alcoa selling these four roads to RailAmerica.

::https://www.freightwaves.com/news/railamerica-buys-four-alcoa-railroads-for-77-5-million

::https://www.progressiverailroading.com/m_a/news/Its-official-RailAmerica-adds-Alcoas-four-roads-to-short-line-roster--6875

::And a SEC filing on the transaction.

::I should add that the citation currently being used to claim that the NYC bought the Massena Terminal Railroad doesn't actually say that. Like many intentions during the troubled decade of the 1960's for the NYC (such as buying the Rutland from Norwood to Malone where the Central had trackage rights and routed lot of traffic on the St. Lawrence line through), the NYC ultimately didn't follow through.

::Many a sales agreement has fallen through at the last minute through the years. That said, it's an interesting bit of history that the Central was serious about purchasing the road and in my humble opinion, it merits a note even though it didn't occur. 2603:7081:C00:6077:F9A3:116C:9206:B619 (talk) 07:05, 1 February 2025 (UTC)

:::Those sources make it pretty clear you're right about the railroad's history. I've corrected the article accordingly. I don't have a source that outright says the NYC purchase attempt fell through, so I've just stated that Alcoa ultimately continued to own the railroad until 2005.
