National identity in infobox
Hi, should we include his national identity (Palestinian) in the infobox? This issue was discussed here. Thedarkknightli (talk) 15:21, 4 March 2025 (UTC)
Hi again @Huldra, would you mind if we delete {{para|nationality|Palestinian}} and adopt {{para|citizenship|
::User:Thedarkknightli I don' think that would be an improvement, He identifies and is identified as a Palestinian. It is very a touchy issue, as some pro-Israelis think that there is no such thing as a "Palestinian" (so therefor they can, conveniently, just take the country), Huldra (talk) 20:08, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::Pinging @Edwardx, a longtime editor of this article. Also pinging @FMSky and @Quaerens-veritatem. Thedarkknightli (talk) 11:51, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
::::Hello {{u|Huldra}} and {{u|Thedarkknightli}}. Wikipedia precepts require that the Infobox Nationality field and "Palestinian" be deleted. Also, for Infobox: Citzenship: {{strikethrough|I would delete "Jordan" and not use "Jordan efn|Hadid identifies as Palestinian".}} It is clear per WP:INFONAT "In biographies, a nationality field should not be used." "Citizenship field can be used, with the following guidelines: Omit when this can be inferred from the birth country (almost all cases)... ." In 'Early life' he was "...born.. in Nazareth" is sufficient. Also, re: Palestininan: per Wikipedia, it is an ethnonational group native to a region, not a country. At most it is a region: see, Palestine (region). Therefore, if there is consensus, leave "of Palestinian origin" {{strikethrough|with Palestineian wikilinked as Palestine (region)|Palestineian}}; however, I believe the present clause in 'Early life', "Hadid was born into a Palestinian Muslim family..." is sufficient'''. Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 23:41, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::But why would you delete "{{tq|Jordan}}", @Quaerens-veritatem? Thanks for your timely response, though. Thedarkknightli (talk) 21:49, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::Sorry, {{u|Thedarkknightli}}, I missed that. That's what I get for moving from one thing to another too quickly. Let's keep Jordan. As to the Palestinian question, as I wrote, (1) "Hadid was born into a Palestinian Muslim family..." seems sufficient, (2) I would delete "of Palestinian origin" from the lead, and (3) I added "Hadid identifies as an American-Palestinian." w/ref so I don’t see the need for your note appended to Jordan. I'm still moving quickly from one thing to another, so please let me know if I'm missing something. Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 23:50, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::@Quaerens-veritatem: well, I actually find his Palestinian identity lead-worthy cuz >10 reliable sources have called him {{tq|Palestinian}} (e.g. [https://www.jpost.com/bds-threat/article-719150 The Jerusalem Post], [https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/mohamed-hadid-racist-homophobic-messages-rep-ritchie-torres-israel-1235878341/ THR], [https://www.thewrap.com/gigi-hadid-israel-palestine-hamas-attacks/ TheWrap], [https://www.thecut.com/article/alana-hadids-watermelon-pictures-is-the-palestinian-a24.html The Cut], [https://mondoweiss.net/2015/12/palestinian-details-refugee/ Mondoweiss], [https://www.newsweek.com/gigi-hadid-breaks-silence-israel-attacks-1833649 Newsweek], [https://www.elle.com.au/culture/news/bella-hadid-palestinian-family-27511/ ELLE Australia], [https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/gigi-and-bella-hadid-donate-1m-palestine-relief-efforts MEE], [https://forward.com/fast-forward/634683/adidas-sl72-olympics-bella-hadid-antisemitism/ The Forward], and [https://www.jta.org/2024/07/18/culture/adidas-said-it-will-revise-1972-olympic-sneaker-campaign-that-features-palestinian-american-activist-bella-hadid JTA]). Thedarkknightli (talk) 19:03, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::Well, {{u|Thedarkknightli}}, as I wrote, "if there is consensus, leave "of Palestinian origin" in the lead. If you want it left in I'll go along, but would like Palestinian wikilinked to Palestininan (the ethnonational group) using Palestininans|Palestininan for the wikilink. He could not be of Palestine origin because he was born in Israel. On the other hand, does your research show that the lead, instead, read "of Palestinian Muslim (wikilink: Islam in Palestine|Palestinian Muslim) origin" per Early life? Of course, Nationality should be deleted from the Infobox per WP:INFONAT and because Palestinians per Wikipedia, are an ethnonational group native to a region, not a country:Palestine (region). Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 19:51, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::{{done}}. Thedarkknightli (talk) 02:42, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::: Just for the record: I strongly disagree with this removal. You basically removed one of the most defining aspects of his life from his infobox. Huldra (talk) 22:31, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::Well guys, I've taken this issue to Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine. The thread is Mohamed Hadid article.
::::::::::Also pinging @SNUGGUMS and @Nikkimaria. Thedarkknightli (talk) 11:53, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
{{outdent}} Not sure why you pinged me of all people, but using "nationality" is redundant when you already list citizenship within the infobox. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 14:26, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
:Thanks for your timely response, @SNUGGUMS! Is a footnote that explains MH's national identity also redundant? As for the reason I pinged you, you had been a regular contributor to infoboxes, and tbh, I appreciated your trustworthiness. Thedarkknightli (talk) 15:05, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
::Probably not as long as it's reasonably concise. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 16:40, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
::I've placed my review at Wikipedia:WikiProject Palestine, but add here that I contend there is no reason to add a note to the infobox. Hadid's being Palestinian is clear to even cursory readers. As I pointed out, Hadid aligns with an ethnonational group, he's not a citizen of the State of Palestine. The Infobox has a Citizenship parameter for a reason: citizenship. The note is a bridge too far. Will we next put notes regarding American Jews since they are an Ethnoreligious group? Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 08:05, 22 March 2025 (UTC)
:::MOS:ETHNICITY is pretty clear. It's not 'relevant to his notibility', as he's not known because he's associated with Palestine. He's known for being a property developer in US. Nswix (talk) 00:09, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
::::I disagree. MH is not only {{tq|known for being a property developer in US}}. His association with Palestine actually does contribute to his notability. Please click all the links I provided in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mohamed_Hadid#c-Thedarkknightli-20250318190300-Quaerens-veritatem-20250317235000 this comment]. Thanks. Thedarkknightli (talk) 01:04, 4 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::I have to agree with {{u|Nswix}}. The Wikipedia precept for the opening paragraph is, Wikiquote: "The opening paragraph should usually provide context for that which made the person notable. In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory where the person is currently a national or permanent resident; or, if the person is notable mainly for past events, where the person was such when they became notable." (emphasis supplied) Clearly, from the article, he is known for "Developing mansions in Bel Air and Beverly Hills". Of course, I question whether the article meets notability in the first place. Could you please add "Palastinian-born" or "Israeli-born" to this page. He was born in Nazereth which is located in what is now Israel. EclipseExpress (talk) 18:58, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
:{{not done}}: this would require consensus, but given the contentious nature of the subject (please see WP:ARBECR), it's not something that you'd be allowed to discuss until you become extend confirmed. M.Bitton (talk) 23:51, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
