They don't make 'em like they used to
This quote would be hopelessly out-of-place in the article; but, as a retired organic chemist and patent agent, this has to be one of my all-time favourite patent examples:
US 405,938: "To twenty kilos of naphthalene one hundred kilos of fuming sulphuric acid containing twenty-three percent of sulphurous anhydride are gradually added..."
