There should be an edit on his page introduction summary. He is longest serving prime minister after JawaharLal Nehru. The current summary says Indian National Congress which is a party not a person or a prime minister. 2600:4040:A627:CD00:B027:B710:9AAE:A8B7 (talk) 20:49, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

[[WP:TOOBIG]] and concise concerns

I took a quick skim through the article and noticed that it is over 10,000 words large, more than the 9,000 words that WP:TOOBIG recommends. I already took out the "Personality" section because, with an article of this size, many might consider it unencyclopedic and too WP:PEACOCK. Here are other suggestions on how to reduce the article's size:

  • I usually recommend that sections be about four paragraphs maximum before another heading is used. This might mean trimming information.
  • "Early life and education" is quite long and I think can be reduced.
  • In "Premiership campaigns", the 2014 election is four paragraphs, the 2019 is three, and the 2024 is two. I think each of these sections should be two or three paragraphs, and the articles about the elections can have more detail.
  • "Hindutva" is quite long and I suggest that it is reduced in size.
  • "Awards and recognition" is too long. I suggest moving some of this information to List of awards and honours received by Narendra Modi and highlighting the most notable ones in this article.

Is a subject-matter expert willing to take a look at this? I would make the changes myself but in the past, my edits to reduce prose size has been reverted. Z1720 (talk) 18:18, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

:{{re|Z1720}} I am a primary author here, and I suppose could be considered a subject matter expert. In my view the general balance is appropriate, but as you say each section could probably lose a little bit of material. This is an instance in which an editor uninvolved with the article may have better perspective as to what is extraneous, so I encourage you to make cuts - some of them will be reverted, but it will give us a basis to discuss further changes. I agree the campaign sections could use trimming, and in general there are many instances where announcements or statements, rather than concrete actions, are used for either praise or criticism, and probably constitute undue weight. With all that said, this is a biography of a person who has led the world's most populous nation for a decade plus. We should not expect to cut it below the allowable range. I would not look to trim more than a 1000 words. Vanamonde93 (talk) 19:03, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

:*{{re|Vanamonde93}} I'm currently in the middle of trimming Gianluigi Buffon, which is taking longer than I expected. I'll add this to my list of articles to get to, but appreciate it if other can take a pass before I start. Z1720 (talk) 20:24, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

1. Mishandling of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Modi’s administration was widely criticized for its response to the COVID-19 crisis. Despite declaring victory over the pandemic in early 2021, India later faced catastrophic outbreaks, with hospitals overwhelmed and oxygen shortages leading to preventable deaths. The government’s decision to allow large religious gatherings (e.g., the Kumbh Mela) and political rallies during the pandemic, coupled with delayed vaccine procurement, exacerbated the crisis. By May 2021, only 1.9% of India’s population was fully vaccinated, despite the country being a major vaccine producer 8.

2. Economic Policies and Inequality

Critics argue that Modi’s economic strategies, such as demonetization (2016) and the rushed implementation of GST, disrupted livelihoods, particularly for small businesses and informal workers. The Gujarat model, often touted for growth, has been criticized for favoring corporate interests over equitable development, with widening income gaps and poor performance in health and education metrics 79. Reports also highlight crony capitalism, such as land sold cheaply to industrialists and loans at near-zero interest rates to corporations 7.

3. Communal Polarization and Minority Rights

Modi’s tenure has seen rising religious tensions, particularly targeting Muslims. Policies like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) were criticized as exclusionary, threatening the citizenship of millions of Muslims. Critics argue these measures align with the BJP’s Hindutva ideology, which seeks to redefine India as a Hindu-majority nation. The 2002 Gujarat riots, during Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister, remain a contentious issue, with allegations of state complicity in violence that killed over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims 713. Recent rhetoric linking Muslims to "infiltrators" and "termites" has further inflamed divisions 13.

4. Erosion of Democratic Institutions

Modi’s government has been accused of undermining democratic norms, including silencing dissent, pressuring the judiciary, and weaponizing investigative agencies against political opponents. The Electoral Bonds scheme, later deemed unconstitutional, allowed anonymous corporate donations to the BJP, consolidating its financial dominance 9. Media freedom has also declined, with journalists facing harassment and Modi avoiding unscripted press interactions 313.

5. Authoritarianism and Suppression of Dissent

Protests against policies like the CAA and farm laws were met with heavy-handed crackdowns, internet shutdowns, and arrests. Student activists, journalists, and opposition leaders have been targeted under draconian laws like the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s autonomy, accompanied by a communications blackout and mass detentions, drew international condemnation 139.

6. Allegations of Misrepresentation and Scandals

Modi has faced personal criticism for allegedly falsifying educational credentials and marital status in affidavits 3. His administration has also been linked to scandals like the Pegasus spyware case, where opposition figures and journalists were surveilled 9.

Conclusion

While Modi’s supporters credit him with infrastructural development and raising India’s global profile, critics argue his policies have deepened social divisions, weakened democratic safeguards, and failed to deliver inclusive growth. The debate over his legacy remains polarized, reflecting broader tensions in India’s political landscape. For further details, refer to sources such as The Guardian 7, The Conversation 8, and analyses by political figures like Mamata Banerjee 6.

Operation Sindoor

Their is nothing in this article about Operation Sindoor conducted by India under the leadership of Modi!!! Could somebody add? 152.58.30.128 (talk) 15:01, 27 May 2025 (UTC)

:Atleast add his notable statements:

:* "The terrorists had wiped out the Sindoor of our sisters, and India responded by destroying their terrorist headquarters."

:* "Not blood, but sindoor flows through my veins."

:* "We gave full freedom to the Indian forces to wipe out the terrorists. And today every terrorist, every terror organisation knows the consequence of wiping out the Sindoor of our sisters and daughters."

:* "Operation Sindoor is now India’s new policy against terrorism, a new line has been drawn."

:* "Sukh chain ki zindagi jiyo, roti khao, warna meri goli to hai hi." "सुख-चैन की ज़िंदगी जियो, रोटी खाओ, वरना मेरी गोली तो है ही।"
