The [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Paul_McCarthy Afd] suggested that detailed sourcing of the text was appropriate given the controversial nature of the artists work.
The lead does not establish notability. One commenter said "It would be outrageous to not have an encyclopedia entry about one of our most important living artists." But the reason he is important needs to be disclosed in the lead.
Where has his work gone from the limit-testing of the 1970s?

May I suggest to some more experienced wikipedia editor that it deserves mention here that one of the artist's sculptures made headlines by getting loose and attacking an orphanage deserves mention?
