Official time for 64 marathon is different from Mathias report of his time

Mathias Kanda in a 2001 article in the Bulawayo ChronicleThe Bulawayo Chronicle (Supplement), April 7 2001 says he ran the 1964 Olympic Marathon in less than 2:20:00. His official time at

1964 Summer Olympic men's marathon says he ran 2:41?

Robson Mrombe, the other African Zimbabwean in the race that day also says he broke 2:20:00 for his time.[http://www.herald.co.zw/index.php?id=3831:former-olympian-gets-second-chance&option=com_content&catid=50:sport&Itemid=142 'Former Olympian gets second chance']

However if you look at the official records for the race at

1964 Summer Olympic men's marathon you see that he officially finished around 2:49:00. My question is: Since both African runners for Zimbabwe are reporting much faster times for their running than the official times, were they told incorrect times back in 1964 when they ran? Did the

mainly white officials of the Rhodesian team back then misreport to them the actual times?
