Indonesian translation notes
I found a thesis (a master's thesis?) about translation Sherlock Holmes into Indonesian, though I don't know how helpful this is to the article as I haven't read the whole thing https://eprints.uny.ac.id/21089/1/Andy%20Setyanta%2007211141017.pdf WhisperToMe (talk) 04:22, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
Redirect
Shouldn't it be redirected here from the "Sherlock" page? Gadir (talk) 22:49, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
:Don't think so, there are other things people could be looking for such as that TV series. Jack234567 (talk) 05:32, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
Early versions of his name
I've just finished reading Julian Barnes's 2005 novel Arthur & George. Highly recommended for Doyle aficionados.
On page 44 he says Doyle initially called his detective Sheridan Hope, then Sherringford Holmes, until finally settling on Sherlock Holmes.
Is this established fact, or just Barnes's novelistic whimsy? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 22:00, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
Suggest addition of Parodies to Adaptations section
There are a few parodies/spoofs of Sherlock Holmes. Three such parodies are Holmlock Shears in the Hollow Needle by Maurice Leblanc; Shamrock Jolnes in Sixes and Sevens by O. Henry; and Sherlaw Kombs in the Triumphs of Eugene Valmont by Robert Barr. Holmlock (talk) 00:53, 25 January 2025 (UTC)
:I agree. The section tries to avoid being comprehensive because it could only fail and be enormous in doing so (subpages work much better for that), but parodies are a notable subtype of pastiche and so I've included a small section (in part relocating some earlier material). I've also added subsection headers to the Related and Derivative Writings section, as it was growing a bit unwieldy. Cheers. Palindromedairy (talk) 20:34, 5 February 2025 (UTC)
Proposed Edit Regarding Inspiration for the Character section
Under the "Inspiration for the Character" section it is claimed:
"Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin is generally acknowledged as the first detective in fiction and served as the prototype for many later characters, including Holmes."
This is inaccurate and should be amended to be clear that Poe's character was one of the first detective characters in ENGLISH fiction. There are a number of examples of detective characters in fiction prior to Poe's, but they are not in English. There is a separate page for "Detective Fiction" that discusses this: Detective fiction#English genre establishment 24.127.244.29 (talk) 03:45, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
Bachelor's thesis on Holmes translations into Japanese
AFAIK https://fau.digital.flvc.org/islandora/object/fau%3A1388/datastream/OBJ/view/_You_are_the_one_fixed_point_in_a_changing_age_.pdf as this is a bachelor's thesis, it cannot be used as a reliable source. However, I think it can be used to mine for info that may be confirmed in other sources... WhisperToMe (talk) 19:51, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
