Improvements

{{ping|Abo Yemen}} I'll clean up the refs and consistently format them, which I've already partially done. Grumpylawnchair (talk) 21:58, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

:Aight bet. Tell me when you're done so that we don't get into edit conflicts 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 22:02, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

::Sure! Grumpylawnchair (talk) 22:06, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

::::Yes, could you expand the lead? I'm rubbish at those. I'll cover all the ref-relatd issues from the peer review. Grumpylawnchair (talk) 15:10, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

:::::I think the lead should be left for last as it is supposed to be a summary of the article. Ill try to fix up the history section issues from the pr first 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 15:46, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

{{outdent}} Hey everyone, I've been slowly adding references. Some stuff is difficult to find. I just added cn tags so the unsourced content is easier to track, but I might have missed some. I also came across [https://www.amnesty.org/fr/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/mde310011976en.pdf this source] that could be used to expand the "Legislature and judiciary" section if anyone wants to give it a try. Paprikaiser (talk) 20:39, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

:Thanks! I'll be using that source 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 07:54, 3 April 2025 (UTC)

:Ok I'll be starting with this hopefully tomorrow. We'll have to copy the article structure of GA like Nazi Germany first so that we know what is missing 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 15:08, 9 April 2025 (UTC)

:Can we use this https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/tr/pdf/ADA215991.pdf for the religion section? 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 10:23, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

::Just FYI I wasn't able to access that link but there's an archived version that works [https://web.archive.org/web/20250202084838/https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/tr/pdf/ADA215991.pdf here]. I wish we had more insights about middle eastern countries that didn't come from the CIA or the US military, but what can you do... It seems like this might include some useful stuff, though. I'll read it in full, only skimmed through it so far. Paprikaiser (talk) 20:33, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

::Sorry for the delay, I've been sick with (hopefully only) the flu this past week. I went through the document and compiled some material that could be added to both the Background section and the Religion section. Should I add it to your sandbox? I don't want to mess up your work. I can always add it to mine instead so you can take a look. Let me know what you prefer! Paprikaiser (talk) 20:17, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

:::It's all good, get better soon. You can add it to the same sandbox, it won't mess up anything. We are in different time zone,s so we aren't going to get into edit conflicts 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 04:48, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

::::I feel much better now, thanks! I added the material to your sandbox, but it still might need to be revised so it flows better. Paprikaiser (talk) 20:22, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::Nice, glad you're better now! As for the religion stuff, @Paprikaiser @Grumpylawnchair do we have to list the history of Islam in the region (i.e. before the state had existed) or do we just list the religious reforms during that time (which is listed in "Islam and the State in South Yemen" by Norman Cigar, I can send yall a copy of the file on discord since it got paywalled on jstor) or both? 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 11:06, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

::::::My first thought would be to give at least a bit of background, so the religious reforms make more sense in context. I'd like to read that file. I found an online version, but it's only partially available because of Hachette v. Internet Archive (sigh). I don't use discord but you could send it to me by email, if that's okay? If not, no worries. Paprikaiser (talk) 20:39, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

::::::{{yo|Abo Yemen}} I have access to the Wikipedia library, so I think I can view it through there. I'm sorry for my lack of response, I've had a nasty flu for the last week. Grumpylawnchair (talk) 21:01, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::::@Paprikaiser can you send me an empty email so that I can reply from gmail and send you the file? Because wikipedia's Special:EmailUser doesn't allow sending files. @Grumpylawnchair Get better soon! Afaik the file used to be free to view in late 2024 (Which is when I luckily downloaded it from there using the wp library) but when I tried accessing it yesterday it wouldn't let me open it, so if this happens to you I can send you the file I downloaded 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 06:56, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

::::::::Oh yeah, and I wanted to say this, can y'all remember which parts of the draft you wrote? :::::::::{{yo|Grumpylawnchair}} hope you're feeling better. Seems that everyone is sick nowadays.

::::Ok so I think that after we're done with the "Decolonization and NLF seizure of power" section in the sandbox, we'll have a somewhat good enough foundation and should move the content from the sandbox to the main article and continue working there 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 14:42, 21 April 2025 (UTC)

= Split? =

while reading about the Corrective Move, on page 152 of [https://www.alinaser.com/public/source/books/Books/%D8%B0%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%B1%D8%A9%20%D9%88%D8%B7%D9%86%20-%20%D8%AC%D9%85%D9%87%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9%20%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%85%D9%86%20%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%8A%D9%85%D9%82%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%B7%D9%8A%D8%A9%2 Ali Nasir's book], he says that "Following the Corrective move, the first republic" referring to People's Republic of Southern Yemen "had ended." I think that this drives the point that the Nasserist "People's Republic of Southern Yemen" or just "Southern Yemen" and the Marxist "People's Democratic Republic of Yemen" or just "Democratic Yemen" are two different entities and should be split into two articles. It would be something like how the North Yemen article is functioning now.

What do y'all think about splitting? @Paprikaiser @Grumpylawnchair @TheTraveller60 @Panam2014 @Algirr @WeaponizingArchitecture 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 15:15, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:Well, I am supporting that dividing but only if we/you have enough information which will be unclided into this new article Algirr (talk) 15:27, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

::we can move everything pre 1969/70 to the new article 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 15:30, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:::Okay, so let do that) Algirr (talk) 15:35, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

::::@Algirr let's wait to see what the others think first 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 15:55, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::Yes, of course!) but personally me is agree with that Algirr (talk) 15:57, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

::::::Do we have enough sources for a split? For example the article should not be a stub. Panam2014 (talk) 17:27, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::::we have enough content to create a GA like Kingdom of Fazughli or Kingdom of al-Abwab and if we search for more sources we could do something like South Kasai 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 17:42, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

::::::::I think we should first expand the article here until we have enough sources and content for a split to work TheTraveller60 (talk) 13:04, 10 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::::::I agree with TheTraveller60. The article as it is now has a bit more than 6000 words ([https://xtools.wmcloud.org/articleinfo/en.wikipedia.org/South_Yemen 6620]). That's still quite far from the 9000-word mark, which is where WP:SIZERULE suggests a split. So I think it's safer to keep everything in one place for now. If it becomes too much, it's always easier to move some parts later into a separate article. But if others feel differently, I'm also okay with that =) My first instinct is just to keep the work all in one place. Paprikaiser (talk) 17:15, 10 May 2025 (UTC)

:Possibly, though IIRC the Nasserist one didn't last as long to where it might be best to mention it in the article instead. WeaponizingArchitecture | yell at me 03:35, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

History section

I think that lots of stuff in the British rule and decolonization should be moved to the Withdrawal from Aden article and the history of this article should begin with the Aden Emergency stuff. We could also make a "Background" section like the one in Nazi Germany#Background and include the stuff about the British colonization and Protectorates. What do yall think? @Paprikaiser @Grumpylawnchair 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 11:25, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

:I'll be working on it (and probably rewrite it) here: User:Abo Yemen/sandbox/South Yemen 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 20:20, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

:I'm no expert but that section does seem ridiculously long, so it's probably a wise decision to trim it and add more relevant content from the Aden Emergency article. Adding a Background section would also help keep things more organized. Overall I think it's a great plan! Paprikaiser (talk) 20:24, 11 April 2025 (UTC)

::I've written a rough background section in the sandbox. I'd appreciate it if someone revises the text after me 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 14:21, 12 April 2025 (UTC)

:::{{yo|Abo Yemen}} Sorry for the late response, I'll take a look at the sandbox shortly :) Grumpylawnchair (talk) 22:22, 12 April 2025 (UTC)

::::@Grumpylawnchair I've addressed the issues raised in that paragraph 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 16:11, 13 April 2025 (UTC)

:@Grumpylawnchair @Paprikaiser Ok, so I think we have a good foundation on the sandbox, and I'll start with moving the stuff that I've written to the main article and leave the stuff yall wrote for yall to move. We'll continue working on the main article from now on 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 14:57, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

::Thank you! I just moved my additions. Paprikaiser (talk) 18:30, 26 April 2025 (UTC)

:::yep, saw it. I assume you want to work on the women's rights section per the email you sent me. I'll be working on the rest of the history stuff. @Grumpylawnchair could you help us cut down the oil section and remove the unnecessary info? 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 09:54, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

::::{{yo|Abo Yemen}} Sure, I'll get to it in the next couple of days. I apologise for my lack of involvement in the article writing, since this is not my area of specialty. Grumpylawnchair (talk) 15:36, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

:Ok so, crazy stuff. I managed to get in contact with a high-ranking member of the Yemeni Socialist Party, told him about myself and how my grandpa was a member of the party, then told him about our project and asked him if I could get my hands on some of the publications of the party. This guy went digging through his hard drives for 2 DAYS and sent me about 20 books! I'm talking about stuff written by Abdul Fattah Ismail, Ali Salem al-Beidh, Abdullah Badheeb, and stuff that was never published online before. Heck, I even have the original copy of "A Red Star Shines Over Arabia" that [https://www.iskrabooks.org/ Iskra books] were going to publish a translated version of. I'll be uploading all this stuff on archives.org hopefully tomorrow morning 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 19:53, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

::Oh wow, that's very impressive (and also your grandpa sounds really cool!) Paprikaiser (talk) 20:03, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

:::Well, he was also a member of the Supreme People's Council (South Yemen) and the first ever House of Representatives (Yemen) in United Yemen, but we're just glazing him now, lol. Anyways, I was thinking that we should start working on the subpages of this article because most of them are poorly written, and we can summarize them in this article (Wikipedia:Summary style]). Army image change

@Algirr not everything has to be commie themed in this article. The old image is one from the armed forces and would make sense to place in a section about conflict. An image of a random Bedouin school organizing a parade as some sort of celebration should be placed in the education section when we get to expanding that section 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 17:08, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

:I argued why in my opinion it fits better. And I chose it not because it is a "random Bedouin school" but because there is a lot of communist symbolism in the section of the text that talks about communist reforms in the country. Algirr (talk) 17:10, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

:I mean, in this section there was talk about transformations to achieve leftist ideas, and then there will be a photo of celebrations with leftist symbols and leftist colors, instead of parade which don't have anything like that Algirr (talk) 17:12, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

::There is a huge red star in the background of the army photo, and that image IS a random Bedouin school. Plus, as I said, not everything has to be commie-themed 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 17:14, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

:::This star in the black and white photo is not striking. Well, I can answer with two things: firstly, South Yemen is a completely communist state, so nothing terrible will happen. Secondly, not all the articles contain such photos of communism. This is a military march with communist symbols, not just a "random Bedouin school" Algirr (talk) 21:06, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

:you can translate these websites and read about those schools: [https://www.khuyut.com/blog/red-star-school] [https://alayyam.info/news/787N1CFP-LVZRN8] [https://www.adngad.net/news/599710] [https://www.shabwaah-press.info/news/83437] 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 17:12, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

::Well, I already understood that these are students of a certain school, but this does not change my opinion Algirr (talk) 21:13, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

::and I have to repeat that the entire article may not be about communism, but the section where my photo is located literally and directly talks about the communist government and its communist reforms Algirr (talk) 21:35, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

South Yemen participating in Lebanese Civil War

@Abo Yemen , Hello. I recently found some [https://www.alinaser.com/%D9%83%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%A8%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%85-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D9%84%D8%A8%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%86 information] and a mention of the participation of troops from South Yemen in the Lebanese Civil War (as part of the Arab Deterrent Force/ADF) - the troops they sent were informally called (most likely within the country) "Peace Battalions", and I have already made these edits to the article about the ADF. I myself will not make these changes to the article in order not to get another 24-hour ban, but I am simply informing you so that you (if you want) could add this information to the article yourself. Algirr (talk) 03:54, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:And I am already uploaded some photos of it Algirr (talk) 03:55, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

:Yeah I was planning on adding something about this on the foreign relations section of the article, but if you want to, you can add it yourself. Btw my grandfather participated with those troops {{smiley}} 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 05:25, 9 May 2025 (UTC)

::No thanks, if you want add it yourself)) I hope your grandfather is okay. Algirr (talk) 15:28, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
