: I'll try to at some point. I generally find that tagging things is better than just sticking them on my watchlist, it means that it's flagged for everyone then. Chris Cunningham 13:06, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

:Tortoiseshell material → {{no redirect|Tortoiseshell}} – Should be primary - none of the other "tortoiseshells", like the butterfly species, cats, or guinea pigs, can be referred to without context by the plain term. If this is not agreed, should be moved to Tortoiseshell (material) per usual disam rules for titles. "What links here" at Tortoiseshell (disambiguation) also suggests the material is primary. Johnbod (talk) 01:59, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

::Why? That is clearly not the common name for it, or indeed a name ever used at all. Best to keep biological and material articles apart, and not all tortoise shell has been from turtles (as the word is used outside science). Johnbod (talk) 10:40, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

:::All tortoise shells are turtle shells, as covered by our Wikipedia article. Whither land or aquatic, etc, we have one article on the topic of the shells of tortoises, and that's "turtle shell". The material is derived from such shells, so tortoiseshell (material) would be much better, with the biological being the stop for the plain name. -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 21:15, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

  • Support per nom, though turtle shell should be included in the hatnote. For the shells of tortoises, see Turtle shell. For other uses, see Tortoiseshell (disambiguation). --BDD (talk) 18:19, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Also, where should tortoise shell redirect? It currently points to Tortoiseshell (disambiguation), but it could also point to Turtle shell or here, especially if the rename goes through. --BDD (talk) 18:19, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
  • It should point to turtle shell regardless of whether this is renamed or not. For example, wikt:tortoise shell mentions the shell of a tortoise meaning as primary one, and the shell of a turtle as another meaning. -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 21:16, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
  • As it is an alternative spelling, it should go with Tortoiseshell - there will be a hat note. Johnbod (talk) 21:30, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
  • It is an alternate term for turtle shell. -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 02:42, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Tortoise shell should redirect to Turtle shell as the biological parallel and a likely target, but would require a redirects hatnote for spelling at Turtle shell: Tortoise shell redirects here. For tortoiseshell material see Tortoiseshell. For other uses see Tortoiseshell (disambiguation). If that's too much complication to introduce at Turtle shell, then leave tortoise shell pointing to Tortoiseshell (disambiguation) as a single point to resolve the objective.SBaker43 (talk) 23:17, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Support. Ghastly as it is to make commercial things from the slaughter of Nature's creations, that is the main meaning accorded this word. DeistCosmos (talk) 19:07, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
  • Oppose: {{noredirect|Tortoiseshell}} should redirect to {{noredirect|Tortoiseshell (disambiguation)}} (as it already does). If it doesn't redirect there, it should redirect to {{noredirect|Turtle shell}}, since that's the basic concept whether that's quite what one is looking for or not. Lack of a space isn't really sufficient dab, IMHO. {{no redirect|Tortoiseshell material}} should be moved to {{no redirect|Tortoiseshell (material)}}. —BarrelProof (talk) 03:01, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

::The single word only relates to the material; the biological shell is never called "tortoiseshell". Johnbod (talk) 03:18, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

  • Support per nomination with hatnote per BDD above. SBaker43 (talk) 23:17, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
