- ::When I google Udo, the top hit is our page U.D.O., not even one of the entries. The second is a person (Udo Dirkschneider), but the third is a Merriam-Webster page on a plant[https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/udo]. Other first page hits include a company, a street dance competition, and the University of Derby. Please provide your thoughts on why an SIA is a primary topic over these. - Weak support: There is also an island in Korea called Udo, and "The island is one of Jeju's most popular destinations, with 2.23 million visitors in 2016." I think that's the main competition to the given name. The plant has several alternative names, but yes, "Udo" seems to be one of them, so it could be a factor as well. As for the other topics, Google searches are not case sensitive and tend to ignore punctuation. Wikipedia article titles do distinguish letter case and punctuation, so "Udo" is not necessarily the same as "UDO" or "U.D.O." on Wikipedia. U.D.O. is a band founded by Udo Dirkschneider, whose given name is Udo, and it is "U.D.O.", not "Udo", and the article about Dirkschneider does not seem to say he uses "Udo" as a mononymous performer name, although it does refer to him as "Udo" (rather than "Dirkschneider") in two places, so it does seem to sometimes be used to refer to him (although the article also uses "Dirkschneider" in about ten places). The dance organization and sports club and the two technology topics would be "UDO", not "Udo". University of Derby online is apparently "UDo", not "Udo", and it is not mentioned in the University of Derby article, so it fails WP:DABMENTION. — BarrelProof (talk) 23:16, 28 April 2025 (UTC) of
- Support. I am aware of Udo as a given name for people, as well as a common name for the plant Aralia cordata. There are other topics referred to as Udo I hadn't been aware of, but I don't think there is any primary topic for "Udo". Plantdrew (talk) 05:10, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- Per WP:DPT, let's have a look at some stats.
{{Pie chart | radius = 75 | label1 = Identifiable | value1 = 69 | label2 = Filtered | value2 = 99 | label3 = Views only | value3 = 232 }}
: [https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Udo WikiNav for March] says 400 readers saw Udo, and from there we could identify 69 outgoing clickstreams, and there were another 99 that were filtered (unidentifiable). Of the identifiable ones, most went to Udo Dirkschneider (29), then to the hatnote destination and the proposal here (18), then Aralia cordata 12, and another 10 were identifiable to U.D.O..
: This is not a statistical distribution that is exact, because the number of filtered clickstreams is actually larger than the rest. IOW it's hard to estimate whether there were another 99 clicks spread out on individual entries named Udo, or if some of these 99 went to the aforementioned topics but happened to get anonymized. My money's usually on the former, because the anonymization algorithm (<10 source-destination pairs) is likely to catch (many) small topics.
: For further hints on usage, we may look to:
:* [https://wikinav.toolforge.org/?language=en&title=Udo_%28disambiguation%29 WikiNav for Udo (disambiguation)]
:: So after clicking from here to there, we can only confirm those 18 or more people proceeded to U.D.O. 12 times. There were no filtered clickstreams there. So the typical hatnote click looks to have been something of a dead end in March. Also, some of the traffic at the disambiguation page has to come from the UDO redirect that points there already.
{{Pie chart | radius = 75 | label1 = Kier | value1 = 735 | label2 = Dirkschneider | value2 = 266 | label3 = Jurgens | value3 = 106 | label4 = Lindenberg | value4 = 103 | label5 = Others, ca. | value5 = 410 }}
:* [https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/massviews/?platform=all-access&agent=user&source=wikilinks&range=all-time&sort=views&direction=1&view=list&target=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udo all-time mass views of all topics listed here]
:: This tells us that the most commonly viewed topics in general were Udo Kier with an average of 735/day, Udo Dirkschneider with an average of 266/day, U.D.O. at 160/day, Udo Jürgens at 106/day, Udo Lindenberg 103/day, etc.
:* [https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/massviews/?platform=all-access&agent=user&source=wikilinks&range=all-time&sort=views&direction=1&view=list&target=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udo%20(disambiguation) all-time mass views of all topics listed at the hatnote destination]
:: This tells us again about U.D.O., then Kiss of Death (1947 film) at 148/day, U.D. Oliveirense at 89/day, Odo 40/day, Aralia cordata 34/day, etc.
: So the group of topics of most interest from the navigation perspective is the singer Udo Dirkschneider and his band. These probably don't have that much claim to long-term significance, but it could be something to examine. At the same time, even if we combine 266+160 into 426 (but we can't do that because they're actually interlinked topics so a lot of people who read about one will read about the other, hence they would be overcounted), the interest in the actor Udo Kier is quite a bit larger than even that. Likewise there's a noticable level of interest in the other two singers, and others.
: The traffic numbers for the 1947 film can't all be attributed to the character surname, so it's hard to judge how much of those 148 is relevant here.
: The Portuguese sports club doesn't seem to have much prominence in the English-speaking world. Odo is another anthroponymy topic, and then there's the plant that we notice in navigation.
: The plant article doesn't command anywhere near the levels of overall readership that would make it relevant from that perspective, but it does seem to be mononymously known as udo to a noticable chunk of readers, and we have to reconcile Mediawiki's inability to distinguish Udo from udo through some disambiguation mechanism.
: I think it's fair to say that we should help navigation by adding more items to the top of "Udo". For example, put the band and the plant in the hatnote.
: Whether this action also needs to mean that we move the surname holders to another place, that's another question, and I'm not at all convinced we have any evidence of that being helpful. We've seen elsewhere that long alphabetic lists of people aren't great click magnets for readers. At the same time, it's clear that if we were to promote the link to Udo Kier here, people might well click it.
: If we proceed with moving people to their own page, there's little doubt in my mind that the clickstream from Udo to Udo (given name) will immediately appear on the next month's list prominently. It's hard to tell at this point if this will mean we made navigation better or worse.
: We can give it a try, and then reconvene in a few months time with new data, and try to read the leaves again. --Joy (talk) 07:53, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. The name appears to be the clear primary topic. -- Necrothesp (talk)
