Is "Wifi calling" really distinct?

{{Discussion top|result=To merge Voice over WLAN to Wi-Fi calling for overlap, the terms sometimes being used synonymously; differences can be discsussed on the page; the target was more contentious, and either seems reasonable - going with the majority view. Klbrain (talk) 15:52, 3 February 2025 (UTC) }}

The header contains "Not to be confused with Wifi calling, a technology with similar naming but different use case.", but the link redirects back to this page. So, is it really a distinct thing? Lê Duy Quang (Make some words | Contributions) at 4h19:32 | 21/3/2023 (UTC) 04:19, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

:I agree that this article might be misleading. What this article is discussing is generic Voice over IP, using a Wi-Fi network for access. It should be part of Voice over IP, if anything.

:The term “Voice over Wi-Fi”, or “Wi-Fi calling”, is used in the telecommunications industry to mean something very different: the use of an untrusted IP network to access a mobile Core (EPC) and IMS platform for voice services. It is closely related to Voice over LTE. Pjcrabbit (talk) 22:20, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

::It's true that, technically, they are not identical, but the first source/reference in this article is "VoWifi (Voice over Wi-Fi)"! Eritr (talk) 08:27, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

:::VoWiFi and WiFi Calling are used interchangably. See [https://www.o2.co.uk/help/network-coverage-and-international/wifi-and-4g-calling this] "WiFi Calling (also called Voice over WiFi or VoWiFi)", and [https://beebom.com/what-is-wi-fi-calling-how-it-works/ this], and also [https://www.sony-asia.com/electronics/support/articles/SX592501 Sony] also say it is the same thing. Either way this article shouldn't exist especially in its current poor unreferenced state. It's most sensible that it gets redirected to Wi-Fi calling. Privateeih (talk) 18:16, 20 May 2024 (UTC)

I do now strongly support merging this into Wi-Fi calling based on what I said above. This article in its current state is unacceptable and pointless to begin with. --Privateeih (talk) 03:22, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

:I support the proposal to merge Voice over WLAN into Wifi calling ~Kvng (talk) 15:07, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

:I think it's right to merge. But let me notify the previous people too. User:Leduyquang03 User:Pjcrabbit User:Eritr User:Privateeih --Tonycosby (talk) 21:29, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

:Merge it somewhere. As currently described, this is not a distinct topic. The article seems to say it is just VoIP using a wireless IP connection. — BarrelProof (talk) 16:29, 15 November 2024 (UTC)

:I agree that Voice over WLAN shouldn't exist as its own article, but I believe that it would be better merged into VoIP rather than Wi-Fi calling, as VoWLAN as a term, and the article as it stands refer to VoIP over a Wi-Fi connection. caraar12345 ✨💃 10:53, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

::Wi-Fi calling already mentions and handles VoWi-Fi redirects so seems a good target. VoIP currently does not have much wireless discussion and would ideally continue to not care much about what type of IP network is used. ~Kvng (talk) 18:25, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

Does it use a server?

In the whole Internet is said how Wi-Fi is great for VoWLAN but isn't mentioned whether it is a point-to-point technology or it phones home and uses a third party server (if yes, then whom belongs this server?) 91.67.77.187 (talk) 17:04, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
