date of birth in dispute

Some sources list his birthdate as June 17, others as March 23rd. I believe the latter is correct Sportswriter 03:14, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

: African American Registry, now one External link via Internet Archive, commemorated his birth on March 23.[http://web.archive.org/web/20100301081919/http://www.aaregistry.com/african_american_history/1444/Wendell_Smith_a_civic_minded_writer]

:Wendell Smith → {{no redirect|Wendell Smith (disambiguation)}} – Make way for a primary redirect to the sportswriter as the primary topic as they have more notability than the actor per pageviews and searches (see WP:GHITS though). A hatnote at the sportswriter article can direct other users for the actor and Wendel Smith. 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 21:23, 25 February 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. TarnishedPathtalk 08:38, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

  • Support, Smith is a Baseball Hall of Fame journalist member who is possible best known for his participation in bringing Jackie Robinson to the major leagues (although his long journalistic career involved much more). Prominently portrayed in the 2013 film about Robinson, 42. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:44, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
  • :Well I'm actually working on making 42 a Good Article; much of the content there is by me! 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 14:47, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
  • ::Very nice, thanks for doing so. Yes, Wendall Smith is certainly primary regarding his work on racial relations and sport desegregation in the United States. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:50, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Page views between the sportswriter and the actor seem completely neck-and-neck,[https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&start=2022-01-01&end=2025-02-25&pages=Wendell_Smith_(sportswriter)|Wendell_Smith_(actor)] so that part of the nom doesn't seem to check out. The actor seems to have had a reasonably storied career too, so absent further evidence I'd say it's probably a wash here and no primary topic.  — Amakuru (talk) 20:16, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
  • :The journalist is also primary for long-term historical significance. His Hall of Fame career and contributions to the racial integration of American sports have few, if any, journalistic equals. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:21, 27 February 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Per Wikipedia:Disambiguation#No primary topic. Page views are equally matched and web searches include both the actor and the journalist and a few other Wendell Smiths in the first 20 hits. WikiNav also shows that the actor has 1,500 incoming pageviews for January 2025 (the last month for which data is available) compared to 761 for the journalist. Celia Homeford (talk) 15:07, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The status quo seems sufficient. There isn't strong enough evidence for a clear primary topic in either direction. Bensci54 (talk) 16:44, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
