Geography

Tallebudgera Creek forms a part of the western and eastern border of Tallebudgera.

History

The traditional owners were the Tulgigin clan of Australian Aboriginals,{{Cite web|url=http://champ.scu.edu.au/Content/Web%20pages/Files/Cobaki%20and%20Terranora%20Broadwater%20ACHMP.pdf|title=Cobaki and Terranora Broadwater Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan|last=Fox|first=Ian|date=August 2006|website=Southern Cross University|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110706115801/http://champ.scu.edu.au/Content/Web%20pages/Files/Cobaki%20and%20Terranora%20Broadwater%20ACHMP.pdf|archive-date=6 July 2011|access-date=13 April 2020}} but in the 2011 Census, Indigenous Australians accounted for just 0.9% of the population of Tallebudgera (around one third of the national average of 2.5%).{{Census 2011 AUS|id=SSC31567 |name=Tallebudgera (State Suburb) |access-date=22 September 2014 |quick=on}}

The village was originally called Maybree, perhaps after the name of a tree that grew locally, while Tallebudgera was the name of the creek and was an Aboriginal word meaning good fish.{{cite web|url=http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/t_standard2.aspx?pid=1082|title=Tallebudgera and Valley|publisher=Gold Coast City|access-date=31 October 2008|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20060826042139/http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/t_standard2.aspx?pid=1082|archive-date=26 August 2006}} Another theory is that the name refers to a property called "Mayberry" owned by pioneers Stephen Tobin and his wife Mary. Tobin was known for his hospitality and it is possible that Mayberry was shortened to Maybree and became well known as a place to stay when travelling through or to Tallebudgera.{{cite web |date=14 March 2013 |title=The story of Stephen and Mary Tobin who left Tipperary, Ireland in 1857 to migrate to Australia |url=http://tobinfamilyhistoryaus.blogspot.com/2013/03/stephen-tobin-ch5-life-at-tallebudgera.html |access-date=22 August 2023 |archive-date=30 March 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220330043040/http://tobinfamilyhistoryaus.blogspot.com/2013/03/stephen-tobin-ch5-life-at-tallebudgera.html |url-status=live }}

While not heritage listed, the single lane Coplicks wooden bridge which crossed Tallebudgera Creek along Tallebudgera Connection Road was a visible sign of the rural nature of the valley. Up until the 1980s, this bridge was the only crossing of the creek along Tallebudgera Connection Road and being one way, drivers had to give way to everyone heading north. The road has now been upgraded with a large 2 lane bridge. The old timber bridge remained until June 2019 when it was replaced with a concrete structure due to safety concerns, much to the disappointment of local residents. The bridge can be accessed from Scotty Logan Lane.{{Cite web|url=http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/tallebudgera-coplick-footbridge-replacement-works-49738.html|title=Tallebudgera - Coplick Footbridge - replacement works|author= |website=City of Gold Coast|access-date=13 September 2024|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190718040845/http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/tallebudgera-coplick-footbridge-replacement-works-49738.html|archive-date=18 July 2019|url-status=dead}}
