The Tani Army is a Tani insurgent group that serves as the military wing of the National Socialist Council of Taniland (NSCT), a separatist organization advocating a separate country called Taniland for the Tani people, encompassing areas inhabited by various Tani tribes, in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.{{Cite web |last=Service |first=Express News |date=2025-01-17 |title=Arunachal Pradesh police appeal to armed group members to return, key recruiter held |url=https://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2025/Jan/17/arunachal-pradesh-police-appeal-to-armed-group-members-to-return-key-recruiter-held?utm_source=chatgpt.com |access-date=2025-01-19 |website=The New Indian Express |language=en}}{{Cite web |title=National Liberation Front of Arunachal (NLFA) |url=https://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/para/nlfa.htm#google_vignette |access-date=2025-01-19 |website=www.globalsecurity.org}}{{Cite web |title=other-data-india-insurgencynortheast-arunachalpradesh-recovery-of-arms_2015 |url=https://www.satp.org/other-data/india-insurgencynortheast-arunachalpradesh/recovery-of-arms_2015 |access-date=2025-01-19 |website=www.satp.org}}{{Cite web |last= |first= |title=Arunachal police express surprise over NLCT demand |url=https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/arunachal-police-express-surprise-over-nlct-demand-114022500364_1.html |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20230805145736/https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/arunachal-police-express-surprise-over-nlct-demand-114022500364_1.html |archive-date=2023-08-05 |access-date=2025-01-19 |website=www.business-standard.com |language=en-US}}
Activities
In December 2024, the UTA publicly opposed the construction of mega Dams in Arunachal Pradesh, demanding the cancellation of all Memorandum of understanding (MoUs) and Memorandum of agreement (MoAs) signed with hydropower developers.{{Cite web |last= |date=2024-12-24 |title=United Tani Army seeks quashing of hydropower projects {{!}} The Arunachal Times |url=https://arunachaltimes.in/index.php/2024/12/24/united-tani-army-seeks-quashing-of-hydropower-projects/?utm_source=chatgpt.com |access-date=2025-01-19 |language=en-US}} The group released videos showcasing their camps, reportedly located near the Indo-Myanmar border, and displayed their arsenal of weapons.{{Cite web |last= |date=2024-12-31 |title=United Tani Army's Anthony Doke releases base videos showing weapons {{!}} The Arunachal Times |url=https://arunachaltimes.in/index.php/2024/12/31/united-tani-armys-anthony-doke-releases-base-videos-showing-weapons/?utm_source=chatgpt.com |access-date=2025-01-19 |language=en-US}}
The activities of the UTA have prompted a heightened security response from Indian authorities. In January 2025, the Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested individuals allegedly involved in recruiting youths into the UTA. Anthony Doke the Commander in Chief of Tani army, has refuted these claims, asserting that the detained individuals are former NLCT members with no current affiliation to the UTA.{{Cite web |last= |first= |date=2025-01-18 |title=Arunachal: Police Refute UTA Chief's Claims, Arrest Key Recruiter |url=https://www.sentinelassam.com/north-east-india-news/arunachal-news/arunachal-police-refute-uta-chiefs-claims-arrest-key-recruiter?utm_source=chatgpt.com |access-date=2025-01-19 |website=Sentinel Assam |language=en}}
