Reception and legacy
Nintendo World Report scored Tank Troopers an 8 out of 10. The staff called the lack of online multiplayer "baffling", but praised the gameplay along with its responsive and smooth controls, stating that it would be "a great addition to any gamer's Nintendo 3DS library".{{cite web|title=Tank Troopers (3DS) Review|url=https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/44127/tank-troopers-3ds-review|website=Nintendo World Report|accessdate=18 February 2017|archive-date=17 February 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170217191409/http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/44127/tank-troopers-3ds-review|url-status=live}}
Nintendo Life reviewed the game, scoring it a 6 out of 10 stars, saying that "The problem is, despite solid foundations, the title falls short simply because it does not offer any online functionality".{{cite web|title=Tank Troopers Review (3DS eShop)|url=https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds-eshop/tank_troopers|website=Nintendo Life|date=6 April 2017|accessdate=6 April 2017|archive-date=6 April 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170406143749/http://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds-eshop/tank_troopers|url-status=live}}
Japanese video game magazine Famitsu gave it a score of 32 out of 40, calling it a very fun and simple game with great local wireless multiplayer. Having no online multiplayer was the most common criticism.{{cite magazine|title=TANK TROOPERS(タンク トゥルーパーズ)のレビュー・評価・感想|url=https://www.famitsu.com/games/t/34049/reviews|magazine=Famitsu|accessdate=31 July 2018|archive-date=14 June 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190614063526/https://www.famitsu.com/games/t/34049/reviews/|url-status=live}}
Destructoid gave the game a 6 out of 10, noting "you have five friends nearby who also have a Nintendo 3DS, and you’re all interested in playing Tank Troopers, go ahead and buy it because you are the only type of gamer who will get the maximum enjoyment out it. For everyone else, it’s an easy pass".{{cite web|title=Review: Tank Troopers|url=https://www.destructoid.com/reviews/review-tank-troopers|website=Destructoid|date=24 February 2017|accessdate=6 April 2017|archive-date=7 August 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210807015703/https://www.destructoid.com/reviews/review-tank-troopers/|url-status=live}}
According to Vitei founder Giles Goddard, in an interview with MinnMax, the studio developed a Nintendo Switch version of Tank Troopers which was canceled. Goddard mentions that Vitei’s rendering engine is what made the Switch version possible. The technology was multiplatform where it could be easily scaled which allowed the development team to dial back resolution if needed.{{cite web|title=Giles Goddard - MinnMax Interview: (timestamp: 20:35)|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK66pX5Jw9o&t=20:35|website=YouTube|date=24 May 2021|accessdate=13 October 2021}}
