Taxonomy

The genus Tanygnathus was introduced by the German naturalist Johann Wagler in 1832.{{ cite journal | last=Wagler | first=Johann Georg | author-link=Johann Georg Wagler | year=1832 | title=Monographia Psittacorum | language=Latin | journal=Abhandlungen der mathematisch-physikalischen Classe, Königlich-Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften | volume=1 | pages=463–750 [501] | url=https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/11355761 }} The type species was subsequently designated as the great-billed parrot (Tanygnathus megalorynchos) by the English zoologist George Robert Gray in 1840.{{ cite book | last=Gray | first=George Robert | author-link=George Robert Gray | year=1840 | title=A List of the Genera of Birds : with an Indication of the Typical Species of Each Genus | place=London | publisher=R. and J.E. The genus contains five species:{{cite web| editor1-last=Gill | editor1-first=Frank | editor1-link=Frank Gill (ornithologist) | editor2-last=Donsker | editor2-first=David | year=2018 | title=Parrots, cockatoos | work=World Bird List Version 8.1 | url=http://www.worldbirdnames.org/bow/parrots/ | publisher=International Ornithologists' Union | accessdate=4 April 2018 }}
