Prior to the national crisis beginning in 2011, he headed the elite Presidential Guard. In 2012, he was ordered to stand down from this position.{{cite news|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-17868326|title=Saleh nephew 'quits Yemen army'|work=BBC News|date=27 April 2012|access-date=22 January 2018}} On 10 April 2013, he was appointed as a military attaché to Germany in an effort to remove the remnants of the previous regime.{{cite news|url=https://apnews.com/article/80cbf54140574386b7d667c696eb7391|title=Yemen president orders military shakeup|work=Associated Press|date=10 April 2013|access-date=29 January 2023}} He re-emerged as a commander in the Houthi-Saleh alliance when the Yemeni Civil War broke out in 2015. When this alliance collapsed in 2017, Tareq Saleh commanded troops loyal to his uncle. Prior to the collapse of the pro-Saleh forces, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya reported that negotiations were ongoing to form a military council in Saleh-held areas, which would have been headed by Tareq.{{cite web|url=http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/gulf/2017/12/02/Consultations-in-Yemen-to-form-military-council-headed-by-Saleh-s-nephew.html|title=Consultations in Yemen to form military council headed by Saleh's nephew|date=2 December 2017|access-date=28 January 2018|via=www.english.alarabiya.net}}

Following his uncle's death, reports emerged that the younger Saleh had also been killed.{{cite web|url=https://news.sky.com/story/former-yemen-presidents-nephew-also-killed-in-attack-11157665|title=Former Yemen president's nephew 'also killed in attack'|website=Sky.com|access-date=22 January 2018}} However, these were never confirmed, and Houthi forces launched a manhunt. Saleh evaded capture and eventually resurfaced in the Hadi loyalist-held Shabwah Governorate.{{cite web|url=http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-disappeared-nephew-of-yemens-saleh-resurfaces-in-the-south-2018-1|title=Disappeared nephew of Yemen's Saleh resurfaces in the south|first=Ahmed|last=Al-Haj|date=11 January 2018|publisher=Business Insider|access-date=13 June 2018|via=businessinsider.com}}
