Biography
He was born in the city of Sakata in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and studied music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.{{cite web|title=The Power of Fate|url=http://www.grandi-tenori.com/am/2009/am_2009-04.php|accessdate=2009-06-16}} He also studied in Italy at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He made his professional operatic debut in 1980 in the title role of Werther. In the early 1980s he sang in Europe, including in São Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon and at the Salzburg Festival.
