The Tata Revotron engine{{Cite web |date=2017-09-07 |title=Revotron and Revotorq Engines |url=https://www.tatamotors.com/blog/corporate/revotron-and-revotorq-engines/ |access-date=2022-03-31 |website=Tata Motors Limited}} is a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine produced by Tata Motors, currently used in the passenger vehicles.

Overview

The first engine from the Revotron line was introduced in 2014 on the Bolt and Zest. It was a {{convert|1199|cc|L|1|abbr=on}}, 4-cylinder, SOHC, 2-Valves per cylinder Turbocharged, multi-point fuel injected unit. It produces {{Convert|89|PS|hp kW|abbr=on|}} at 5000 rpm, and {{Convert|140|Nm|lb.ft}} of torque at 1500-4500 rpm. The engine features multiple driving modes for better throttle response, a Smart ECU, an eight-holed fuel injector, a stiffened crankcase, and a new catalytic converter. In 2015 Tata showcased the Revotron 1.2L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that debuted later with Tiago and followed by Tigor. The Engine was having some new features such as dual overhead camshaft driven by timing chain instead of timing belt in the 4 cylinder unit, variable cam timing with iEGR function, variable displacement oil pump, 4-valves per cylinder with Hydraulic lash adjuster In 2017, Tata launched the turbocharged version of the Revotron engine with the Nexon. It was the same 1.2L 3-cylinder petrol engine but with a turbocharger and intercooler bolted onto it. It still used the conventional MPFi multi-port fuel injection although most of its rivals had turbo-petrol engines of around the same size with GDi. This turbocharged version of the Revotron engine produced {{convert|110|PS|hp kW|abbr=on}} and {{convert|170|Nm|lb.ft|abbr=on}}. In 2020, the more powerful version of this engine with {{convert|120|PS|hp kW|abbr=on}} made its debut on the BS6-compliant Nexon facelift, albeit it still uses MPFi.

In January 2021, Tata launched the turbocharged Revotron engine on the Altroz in a new variant called Altroz iTurbo,{{Cite web |title=Tata Altroz iTurbo review, test drive - Introduction |url=https://www.autocarindia.com/car-reviews/tata-altroz-iturbo-review-test-drive-419699 |access-date=2023-04-23 |website=Autocar India |language=en}} albeit with lower power and torque figures at {{convert|110|PS|hp kW|abbr=on}} and {{convert|140|Nm|lb.ft|abbr=on}}. Tata cited that the reason for the lower output is Tata wanted to differentiate the Altroz and Nexon and that there were also packaging challenges in incorporating the Nexon’s physically larger 6-speed manual transmission, which would have been necessary to handle the increased power., but in January 2023 at the Auto Expo 2023 Tata showcased the Altroz Racer,{{Cite web |title=Tata Motors Altroz Racer Features |url=https://autoexpo.tatamotors.com/products/passenger-vehicles/altroz-racer-features.aspx |access-date=2023-04-14 |website=autoexpo.tatamotors.com}} an even sportier variant of the Altroz with a 6-speed manual gearbox which allowed for the same {{convert|120|PS|hp kW|abbr=on}} as the Nexon. Tata later confirmed that the Altroz Racer will go into production and may potentially replace the slow-selling iTurbo variant.

In January 2022, Tata announced the CNG variant for its Tata Tiago & Tata Tigor called iCNG.{{Cite web |title=Tata Tiago CNG, Tigor CNG launched; prices start from Rs 6.09 lakh |url=https://www.autocarindia.com/car-news/tata-tiago-cng-tigor-cng-launched-prices-start-from-rs-609-lakh-423288 |access-date=2023-04-24 |website=Autocar India}} These were the first cars from Tata Motors to have CNG as a fuel option. This engine produces 73.5 PS (72.5 bhp, 55 kW) and 95 Nm Torque and is available with a 5 speed manual gearbox. These engines could be started in CNG mode, a feature no other car offers. Tata Motors has unveiled Punch & Altroz as well in the iCNG avatar.
