Indonesian sociologist Wirumoto has suggested that it serves as a stress release mechanism, as it often occurs following examinations, holiday seasons or graduation. W. D. Mansur has suggested that it results not from personal factors such as religion or personality, but from group dynamics such as solidarity.{{cite book|author1=Florence Denmark|author2=Leonore Loeb Adler|title=International Perspectives on Violence|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Imvwy0DRb1IC&pg=PA100|year=2004|publisher=Greenwood Publishing Group|isbn=978-0-275-97498-5|pages=100–}}
