Background and composition

On working with Lopez, Bad Bunny revealed: "I barely said a word to her because I was so nervous. I felt the pressure." He added: "She's a total professional, a diva, a mega-star, not just in music but in the entertainment industry. You always learn from the greats, and J.Lo is one."{{cite web |last1=Calvario |first1=Liz |title=Bad Bunny Says He Was Starstruck By Jennifer Lopez on 'Te Guste' Video: 'I Barely Said a Word' (Exclusive) |url=https://www.etonline.com/bad-bunny-says-he-was-starstruck-by-jennifer-lopez-on-te-guste-video-i-barely-said-a-word-exclusive |website=Entertainment Tonight |accessdate=November 16, 2018 |date=November 14, 2018 |archive-date=November 16, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181116221436/https://www.etonline.com/bad-bunny-says-he-was-starstruck-by-jennifer-lopez-on-te-guste-video-i-barely-said-a-word-exclusive |url-status=live }} The Fader called the track "reggaetón" and a "long-awaited" collaboration.{{cite web|url=https://www.thefader.com/2018/11/07/bad-bunny-jennifer-lopez-te-guste-video-trailer|title=Watch a trailer for Bad Bunny and Jennifer Lopez's 'Te Gusté'|work=The Fader|last=Darville|first=Jordan|date=November 7, 2018|accessdate=November 8, 2018|archive-date=November 8, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181108025853/https://www.thefader.com/2018/11/07/bad-bunny-jennifer-lopez-te-guste-video-trailer|url-status=live}} According to Suzette Fernandez of Billboard, the song's lyrics feature an exchange "when a couple meet for the first time, like each other and are remembering that moment."{{cite magazine|url=https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/8484089/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-te-guste-video|title=Jennifer Lopez & Bad Bunny Turn Up the Heat in New 'Te Gusté' Video: Watch|last=Fernandez|first=Suzette|date=November 8, 2018|magazine=Billboard|accessdate=November 9, 2018|archive-date=November 9, 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181109203808/https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/latin/8484089/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-te-guste-video|url-status=live}}

Critical reception

Mike Wass of Idolator was positive, writing: "The reggaetón banger is certainly catchy enough and that summery production is guaranteed to cure the winter blues."{{cite web|url=https://www.idolator.com/7687993/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-te-guste-video-sexiest-pics|title=Jennifer Lopez & Bad Bunny's 'Te Gusté' Video Is Sizzling Hot|publisher=Idolator|last=Wass|first=Mike|date=November 8, 2018|accessdate=November 9, 2018|archive-date=June 26, 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220626005035/https://www.idolator.com/7687993/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-te-guste-video-sexiest-pics|url-status=live}} Jeff Benjamin of Forbes noted that the song "lets J.Lo hone in on [sic] her musical chameleon style and deliver on a trap-y cut, while Bad Bunny can shine in the sound that made him a star. Plus, with Bad's recent hot streak and his two aforementioned hits, this collaboration is mutually beneficial to both parties who want to further up their already impressive weight in the Latin-pop world and continuously prove their superstardom."{{cite web |last=Benjamin |first=Jeff |title=Jennifer Lopez & Bad Bunny Team For Tropical-Trap Joint 'Te Gusté': Watch |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbenjamin/2018/11/09/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-te-guste-video/#193d083a2c8d |website=Forbes |accessdate=November 10, 2018 |date=November 9, 2018 |archive-date=November 11, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181111001220/https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbenjamin/2018/11/09/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-te-guste-video/#193d083a2c8d |url-status=live }} NPR's Stefanie Fernández was receptive of the song, stating: "None of it feels like she's trying too hard; she has earned this [...] It would seem that if everything Bad Bunny has touched this year has turned to gold, JLo has the power to make it stay."{{cite web |last=Fernández |first=Stefanie |title='Te Guste': Our Favorite Latin Songs This Week |url=https://www.npr.org/sections/altlatino/2018/11/14/667538743/te-guste-our-favorite-latin-songs-this-week |publisher=NPR |accessdate=November 14, 2018 |date=November 14, 2018 |archive-date=November 14, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181114180253/https://www.npr.org/sections/altlatino/2018/11/14/667538743/te-guste-our-favorite-latin-songs-this-week |url-status=live }} Rolling Stone writer Brittany Spanos described "Te Guste" as a "trap-pop gamechanger" and a "rom-com of a duet".{{cite magazine |last1=Spanos |first1=Brittany |title=This Week in Music: Jennifer Lopez and Bad Bunny, Sade, Little Mix |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-sade-little-mix-youtube-music-playlist-755068/ |magazine=Rolling Stone |accessdate=November 16, 2018 |date=November 16, 2018 |archive-date=November 17, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181117104945/https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/jennifer-lopez-bad-bunny-sade-little-mix-youtube-music-playlist-755068/ |url-status=live }}
