He was hired as public affairs director for Omnipoint Communications, a GSM wireless service provider."Researchers Crack Code" The New York Times, Dec. 7, 1999 In that capacity, he also served as an international advocate for the GSM Association, a London-based trade organization for the world's wireless operators. Phillips moved back to California in 2000. He began a five-year investigation into the assassination of Ghevont Tourian, the Armenian Archbishop who was stabbed to death in a New York City church on Christmas Eve Sunday morning in 1933, an event which continues to divide Armenians worldwide. That research led Phillips to write a historical novel, Murder at the Altar (Hye Books, 2008)."Controversial Novel Arrives in Moscow and Yerevan" AZG Daily, Feb. 25, 2009. This review was in the independent website Hetq [http://www.old.hetq.am/en/culture/terry-phillips/]{{cite book | url=https://www.amazon.com/Murder-at-Altar-Historical-Novel-ebook/dp/B004YTFFCG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=murder+at+the+altar+terry+phillips&qid=1623021989&sr=8-1 | title=Murder at the Altar: A Historical Novel | date=30 April 2011 | publisher=Hye Books }} An anonymous letter to the editor of the Asbarez newspaper called Phillips “an agent of discord” [http://www.asbarez.com/59520/mr-terry-phillips-an-agent-of-discord/][http://www.redroom.com/audio/terry-phillips-interview-part-1 Terry Phillips interview at Red Room] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080616153430/http://www.redroom.com/audio/terry-phillips-interview-part-1 |date=2008-06-16 }} A panel discussion of this topic took place at the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR) in Belmont, Mass.
