As Gawker reported in late 2011, "The Tumblr displays iPhone screenshots of text message conversations between the site's creator and Bennett, his 17-year-old cousin who 'thinks he's a Crip, works at Amoco, has a girlfriend named Mercedes, and is one of the most unintentionally funny and brilliant souls on the planet.'"{{cite web|title=The Nerdy White Rapper Who Launched Two Internet Sensations in 24 Hours|url=http://gawker.com/5864076/the-nerdy-white-rapper-who-launched-two-internet-sensations-in-24-hours|work=Gawker|accessdate=2 August 2013}} While The Smoking Gun reported that Bennett was purely an invention,{{cite web|url=http://www.thesmokinggun.com/buster/texts-not-from-bennett-765319|work=The Smoking Gun|accessdate=2 August 2013|title = Sorry, There Is No Actual 17-Year-Old Named Bennett Writing Those Purported "Texts From Bennett"|date=2 December 2011}} Lethal maintained the veracity of his creation, telling The Huffington Post, "[The Smoking Gun story] is absolutely 100 percent inaccurate."{{cite news|url=https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/02/texts-from-bennett_n_1126264.html|work=The Huffington Post|accessdate=2 August 2013|title = Texts From Bennett: Mac Lethal Speaks About His Internet Sensations|first=Simon|last=McCormack|date=2 December 2011}}

The book is described as "[a] family story for the twenty-first century, based on the phenomenally popular Texts from Bennett Tumblr blog, this epistolary novel chronicles the year that Bennett and the rest of his freeloading family moved into his cousin Mac's household."{{Cite book|title = Amazon.com|date = 3 September 2013|isbn = 978-1476706870|last1 = Lethal|first1 = Mac}} According to the author, "the book is an ode to how I met my wife and it's a love story."{{Cite web|url = http://blogs.westword.com/showandtell/2013/08/mac_lethal_on_turning_his_text.php|title = Mac Lethal on turning his Texts from Bennett Tumblr into a novel|date = 2013-08-30|first = Cory|last = Casciato|website = Westword}}
Texts from Bennett was a Library Journal "pick of the month" for "African American Fiction". Writing for the journal, Rollie Welch notes "The author’s portrayal of poverty, drug use, and the working poor white folks’ struggle to get by has serious street cred."{{Cite web|url = http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/2013/08/collection-development/african-american-fiction-and-more/relationship-talk-african-american-fiction-and-more/|title =
Booklist, a trade publication "from the trusted experts at the American Library Association", calls Lethal's book a "well-intended, albeit a little uneven, first novel... the heart of the novel is pure." Reviewer Mark Eleveld says, "This is a necessary novel that follows the phenomenon of poor white teens diving into black cultural stereotypes. The language is rough but true, and tough issues are addressed with care and understanding."{{Cite book|url = http://www.booklistonline.com/Texts-from-Bennet-Mac-Lethal/pid=6270783|title = Texts from Bennet [sic]|accessdate = |publisher = Booklist|last = Eleveld|first = Mark}}
