Competing for Indiana University, Shideler held an unofficial world record set a month before the 1904 Summer Olympics with a time of 15.0 seconds in the 100 meters hurdle. The watch of one of the three timers failed to start costing Shideler official verification for the mark.{{cite book |editor1-first=Bob |editor1-last=Hammel |editor2-first=Kit |editor2-last=Klingelhoffer |title=Glory of Old IU: 100 Years of Indiana Athletics |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=8uobLCQZlhAC |accessdate=December 28, 2011 |year=1999 |publisher=Sports Publishing LLC |isbn=9781582610689 |pages=11 }}
