Overview

The album is the successor to 2021's As the Love Continues, and was produced by John Congleton and recorded at Chem 19 Studios in Scotland.{{cite web |last1=Murray |first1=Robin |title=Mogwai Announce New Album 'The Bad Fire' |url=https://www.clashmusic.com/news/mogwai-announce-new-album-the-bad-fire/ |website=ClashMusic |access-date=29 October 2024}} The cover art by Dave "DLT" Thomas features a painting of a volcanic crater; the phrase "Bad Fire" being an old Scottish name for hell. Three tracks ("God Gets You Back", "Lion Rumpus" and "Fanzine Made of Flesh") were released on or before the announcement date of the album.{{cite web |last1=Eede |first1=Christian |title=Mogwai Share New Track, 'God Gets You Back' |url=https://thequietus.com/news/mogwai-share-new-track-god-gets-you-back/ |website=The Quietus |date=18 September 2024 |access-date=29 October 2024}}{{cite web |last1=Skinner |first1=Tom |title=Mogwai share expansive single 'Lion Rumpus' and announce new album 'The Bad Fire' |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/mogwai-share-expansive-single-lion-rumpus-and-announce-new-album-the-bad-fire-3807523 |website=NME |access-date=29 October 2024}}{{cite web |last1=Skinner |first1=Tom |title=Listen to Mogwai’s playful and “pretty different” new single ‘Fanzine Made Of Flesh’ |url=https://www.nme.com/news/music/listen-to-mogwais-playful-and-pretty-different-new-single-fanzine-made-of-flesh-3826747 |website=NME |access-date=24 January 2025}} In a press release accompanying the announcement of the album, the band said "After the high of putting out As the Love Continues, the following years were personally hard for us. We’ve dealt with a lot of loss and in Barry’s case a serious family illness with one of his daughters. Getting back together to write and record this record felt like a refuge and with John Congleton we feel that we’ve made something special. We often hear from people that our music has helped them get through hard times in their lives and for once I think it applies to us as well."
