The Dead Channel Trilogy (stylized as deadchannel_Trilogy) is a trilogy of studio albums by American multi-genre project Blue Stahli, consisting of the project's seventh, eighth, and ninth albums (if including the instrumental Antisleep series). The albums, titled Quartz, Copper, and Obsidian, were released on October 2, November 13, 2020, and January 15, 2021, respectively; the first independent releases in Blue Stahli's history.{{Cite web|last=Parsons|first=Luke|date=October 11, 2020|title=Blue Stahli – Quartz (Album Review)|url=https://abrasivenoise.com/blue-stahli-quartz-album-review/|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210117103512/https://abrasivenoise.com/blue-stahli-quartz-album-review/ |archive-date=January 17, 2021 |access-date=January 24, 2021|website=Abrasive Noise|language=en-US}}{{Cite web|last=Parsons|first=Luke|date=November 18, 2020|title=Blue Stahli – Copper (Album Review)|url=https://abrasivenoise.com/blue-stahli-copper-album-review/|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20201118190020/https://abrasivenoise.com/blue-stahli-copper-album-review/ |archive-date=November 18, 2020 |access-date=January 24, 2021|website=Abrasive Noise|language=en-US}}{{Cite web|last=Parsons|first=Luke|date=January 20, 2021|title=Blue Stahli – Obsidian (Album Review) + dead_Channel trilogy round-up|url=https://abrasivenoise.com/blue-stahli-obsidian-album-review-dead_channel-trilogy-round-up/|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210120193014/https://abrasivenoise.com/blue-stahli-obsidian-album-review-dead_channel-trilogy-round-up/ |archive-date=January 20, 2021 |access-date=January 24, 2021|website=Abrasive Noise|language=en-US}}
Background and promotion
Obsidian was written before Quartz and Copper, and it was originally planned to be a standalone album.{{cite web |last1=Willschick |first1=Aaron |title=Blue Stahli Delivers a Track-by-Track Rundown of the Personal Journey that is 'Obsidian' |url=https://v13.net/2021/01/blue-stahli-delivers-a-track-by-track-rundown-of-the-personal-journey-that-is-obsidian/ |publisher=V13 |date=January 18, 2021}} On September 13, 2018, the single "Lakes of Flame" was initially released for the album.{{cite web |last1=Zukowski |first1=Zenae |title=Blue Stahli premiere new song "Lakes of Flame" |url=https://www.metalinsider.net/new-music/blue-stahli-premiere-new-song-lakes-of-flame |website=Metal Insider |date=September 13, 2018}} Obsidian was originally slated for a 2019 release with "Lakes of Flame" as the lead single, but due to legality issues with FiXT Music, it was later moved to 2021, with "Lakes of Flame" becoming a non-album single.
Eventually, Quartz and Copper were written and planned to be released in a trilogy alongside Obsidian. Blue Stahli founder Bret Autrey's inspiration for the albums came from caring for his terminally ill mother who died in 2018 from brain cancer. In her memory, Autrey used her piano to record many of the songs.{{cite web |last1=Jolicoeur |first1=Todd |title=A Dirty Dozen with BLUE STAHLI – January 2021 |url=https://100percentrock.com/2021/01/a-dirty-dozen-with-blue-stahli-january-2021/ |website=100 Percent Rock |date=January 19, 2021}} Autrey has considered Quartz to be "just awash of '90s craziness". For the other two albums, "Copper achieves the melancholy, experimental soundscape, while Obsidian defines who he is after his mom's death."{{cite web |last1=Fuoco-Karasinski |first1=Christina |title=Bret Autrey finds music once again |url=https://www.ladowntownnews.com/arts_and_entertainment/bret-autrey-finds-music-once-again/article_36d1d2f0-7158-11eb-a043-fb5da9dce9a8.html |website=ladowntownnews.com |date=February 21, 2021}}
