The Girl Guides Association of Jamaica (GGAJ) is the Guiding organisation of Jamaica. It served 5,903 members (as of 2006).[http://western.wagggsworld.org/en/organisations/70 World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts - Member organizations - The Girl Guides Association of Jamaica] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081016053555/http://western.wagggsworld.org/en/organisations/70 |date=2008-10-16 }} Founded in 1915, the girls-only organisation became an associate member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1963 and a full member in 1966.

History

Girl Guiding was introduced to Jamaica by Miss Clare Messias in 1915. After Jamaica's independence in 1962, the Jamaican Girl Guides remained a branch of the United Kingdom's Guide Association until July 17, 1967, when the Girl Guides Association of Jamaica was incorporated.[http://www.caricomlaw.org/docs/The%20Boy%20Scouts%20and%20Girl%20Guides%20Associations%20Act.pdf The Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Associations Act]{{dead link|date=March 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}

A scission of the association led to the formation of the Girl Scouts of Jamaica in 2008.

Program

The association works in three age-groups:[http://worldguiding.net/J/Jamaica%20Girl%20Guides.pdf Jamaica] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080827162648/http://www.worldguiding.net/J/Jamaica%20Girl%20Guides.pdf |date=2008-08-27 }}

  • Brownies - ages 7 to 11
  • Guides - ages 10 to 16
  • Senior section - ages 14 to 20

One focus of the program is the prevention of AIDS.[http://www.jis.gov.jm/ggpages/html/20061003T110000-0500_10196_JIS_GIRL_GUIDES_ASSOCIATION_LAUNCHES_COOKIE_MONTH_TO_RAISE__500_000.asp Girl Guides Association Launches Cookie Month to Raise $500,000] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070714210947/http://www.jis.gov.jm/ggpages/html/20061003T110000-0500_10196_JIS_GIRL_GUIDES_ASSOCIATION_LAUNCHES_COOKIE_MONTH_TO_RAISE__500_000.asp |date=2007-07-14 }}
